Guidance on the route, preparation and practical next steps.

What is embassy attestation?

It is authentication by the destination’s embassy, consulate or representative office. It may be needed after document preparation and FCDO legalisation. The required sequence depends on the destination and document.

Do I need embassy attestation or just an apostille?

Where the Apostille Convention applies to your document between the UK and the destination, an apostille replaces consular legalisation. Other routes may require further authentication. The recipient’s requirements for the document itself still need to be checked.

Does every document need solicitor certification?

No. Some official documents can be submitted directly for FCDO legalisation. Others need certification first. The recipient or relevant office may specify an original, a certified copy or a particular signing professional.

Check the GOV.UK preparation guidance ↗

Do commercial documents need extra certification?

Some commercial and export documents need chamber certification, including Arab-British Chamber of Commerce certification where applicable. We check the requirements for the document and destination before arranging the route.

What about documents for mainland China?

Since 7 November 2023, UK public documents covered by the Convention use the apostille route for mainland China without Chinese consular legalisation. The recipient may still have requirements for the document’s format, translation or date of issue.

How long does embassy attestation take?

Timing depends on the required stages, document checks and the relevant office’s processing times. Additional verification, supporting documents and courier delivery can affect completion. Share your deadline so we can discuss the expected timing for your application.

Can you assist if I am outside the UK?

Yes. We assist overseas clients with UK document preparation, apostille and embassy or consular submission, with courier return available. Contact us before posting originals so we can confirm what is needed.

What should I include when requesting a quote?
