If Halifax asks you for a certified copy of ID or a certified copy of proof of address, the safest approach is to follow Halifax’s published requirements closely. Halifax says it will try to complete ID checks electronically first, but if that is not possible, it may ask for valid original or certified documents, usually one proof of identity document and one proof of address document. Halifax also says documents must be current and not expired.
For certified documents, Halifax says the certifier may be a solicitor or accountant who is a member of a recognised professional body. Halifax also requires the certifier to state: “I have seen the original document and I certify this to be a true copy of the original”, then sign, print their name, date the copy, state their professional capacity, and apply a branch or practice stamp as appropriate.
Common Halifax certified copy documents
For proof of identity, Halifax commonly accepts documents such as:
- unexpired passport
- unexpired UK photo driving licence
- biometric residence permit
For proof of address, Halifax commonly accepts documents such as:
- utility bill
- council tax letter or statement
- bank or building society statement
- mortgage statement
- HMRC correspondence
The exact document must fit Halifax’s own date and content rules.
