If you are a British passport holder living overseas, you may still be asked to provide an ACRO Police Certificate for a visa, work permit, residence application, citizenship application, overseas employment check, or foreign government procedure.
This can feel confusing if you have never lived in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. Many applicants get stuck when the ACRO online form asks for UK address history.
ACRO’s guidance confirms that applicants may still apply for a Police Certificate in this situation if an authority has requested a UK police check and the applicant can provide a copy of their British passport. If you have never lived in the UK, ACRO advises you to contact ACRO Customer Services for guidance on how to complete the application form.
Once ACRO issues the Police Certificate, Ginkgo Advisory can help you with the next stage: UK FCDO apostille, embassy legalisation, consular attestation, and secure overseas courier delivery.
I Have Never Lived in the United Kingdom. Can I Still Apply for an ACRO Police Certificate?
Yes, in some cases.
If you have never lived in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, you may still be able to apply for an ACRO Police Certificate if:
- an authority has advised that a UK police check is required; and
- you can provide a copy of your British passport.
This often applies to British citizens who live abroad, have never held a UK residential address, but need a UK police certificate for an overseas visa, work permit, immigration file, residency process, teaching job, healthcare role, or government submission.
If you have never lived in the UK and do not have a British passport, ACRO may be unable to process your application. You should contact ACRO directly before submitting the form.
ACRO Customer Services can be contacted by email at customer.services@acro.police.uk or by telephone at +44 (0)23 8045 1477.
What Address Should You Use If You Have Never Lived in the UK?
If you have never lived in the UK, you should follow ACRO’s own guidance. ACRO may tell you how to complete the “last UK address” section of the online application form.
You should not guess the answer. You should contact ACRO Customer Services and ask them how they want you to complete the form.
This is important because ACRO controls the Police Certificate application process. Ginkgo Advisory can assist with the apostille and legalisation stage after the certificate has been issued, but ACRO must confirm how you should complete the application if you have no UK address history.
Why Your ACRO Police Certificate May Need an Apostille
Many overseas authorities will not accept a UK Police Certificate unless it has been legalised.
For many countries, the required step is a UK FCDO apostille. The apostille is issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It confirms the UK origin of the document for overseas use.
You may need an apostille on your ACRO Police Certificate if you are submitting it for:
- a work visa;
- a residence permit;
- a citizenship application;
- an overseas teaching job;
- an international school position;
- a healthcare licence;
- a foreign immigration authority;
- an embassy or consulate;
- a Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
- an overseas employer;
- a professional registration body.
Some countries may also require embassy legalisation, consular attestation, or embassy authentication after the FCDO apostille. This depends on the destination country and the receiving authority’s rules.
How Ginkgo Advisory Can Help
Ginkgo Advisory helps overseas clients legalise UK documents for international use.
If you have applied for an ACRO Police Certificate, you can ask ACRO to send the original certificate directly to our London office. Once we receive it, we can arrange the UK FCDO apostille.
We offer a 2 working day UK apostille service for ACRO Police Certificates, subject to document suitability and FCDO processing.
If your destination country requires more than an apostille, we can also assist with embassy legalisation, consular attestation, or embassy authentication.
We can also arrange secure international courier delivery once the apostille or legalisation process has been completed.
ACRO Police Certificate Apostille Process
The process is straightforward.
First, you apply to ACRO online. If you have never lived in the UK, you should contact ACRO Customer Services before completing the address history section.
Second, you ask ACRO to send the original Police Certificate directly to our London office.
Third, we notify you when the certificate arrives.
Fourth, we arrange the FCDO apostille.
Fifth, if required, we arrange embassy legalisation or consular attestation.
Finally, we courier the completed document to you or to your nominated recipient.
This allows overseas clients to complete the UK apostille stage without travelling to the UK.
Who This Service Is For
This service is suitable for British passport holders overseas who need an ACRO Police Certificate apostilled for international use.
It is also suitable for applicants who have never lived in the UK but have been asked by an overseas authority to provide a UK police check.
Common examples include British citizens living in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and other overseas jurisdictions.
The service is especially useful if the receiving authority has asked for a legalised UK police certificate, an apostilled ACRO Police Certificate, or an ACRO Police Certificate with embassy attestation.
Need an ACRO Police Certificate Apostille?
If your ACRO Police Certificate needs to be used outside the UK, Ginkgo Advisory can assist with the apostille and legalisation stage.
You may arrange for ACRO to send the original certificate directly to our London office. We can then handle the FCDO apostille, further embassy legalisation where required, and secure courier delivery.
This gives overseas applicants a clear route from ACRO certificate issuance to overseas document acceptance.
