British Nationals Getting Married in Zimbabwe

If you are a British national living in the UK and planning to get married in Zimbabwe, you must follow the Zimbabwe marriage process.

Your marriage will usually be recognised in the UK if:

  • you follow the correct process under Zimbabwe law; and
  • the marriage would be allowed under UK law.

The Zimbabwe authority, registrar, venue or person conducting your ceremony can confirm which documents you need.

British nationals living in the UK usually need a Certificate of No Impediment, also known as a CNI, before getting married in Zimbabwe.

Certificate of No Impediment for Zimbabwe

A Certificate of No Impediment is a legal document.

It confirms that no legal barrier to your marriage has been shown to exist.

If you live in the UK, you should apply for the CNI through a UK register office before travelling to Zimbabwe.

You need to book an appointment at the register office and give notice.

When booking the appointment, tell the register office that you need a CNI to get married abroad.

Check the Timing Before You Apply

Your UK CNI should be accepted in Zimbabwe.

However, you should check with the Zimbabwe authority or person conducting your ceremony before you apply.

They can confirm:

  • how recent the CNI must be;
  • whether the CNI needs an apostille;
  • whether it needs translation;
  • whether other documents are required;
  • whether your divorce document needs legalisation;
  • whether the names must appear in a specific format.

This matters because timing rules may affect your wedding plan.

Names Must Match Your Passports

The names on your CNI should match the names on your passports.

This includes middle names.

Before you give notice, check the spelling of:

  • your full name;
  • your partner’s full name;
  • all middle names;
  • dates of birth;
  • passport details;
  • any previous name details.

A mismatch may delay the Zimbabwe marriage process.

It may also create questions when you submit documents to the local authority.

Marriage Registration in Zimbabwe

If you marry in Zimbabwe, your marriage will be registered in Zimbabwe.

It will not be added to UK marriage records.

You cannot register the marriage later at a UK register office, British Embassy or British Consulate.

You should keep your Zimbabwe marriage certificate as evidence of your marriage.

If you want to use the certificate outside Zimbabwe, you may need a translation, apostille or further legalisation, depending on the destination country.

Other Documents for Marriage in Zimbabwe

A UK CNI may not be the only document you need.

The Zimbabwe authority may also ask for:

  • your UK passport;
  • your partner’s passport or identity document;
  • birth certificates;
  • proof of address;
  • proof of nationality;
  • proof of marital status;
  • proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;
  • apostilled documents;
  • certified translations.

You should check the exact list before you book travel or confirm a ceremony date.

If You Were Previously Married

If you were previously married, the Zimbabwe authority may ask for proof that the previous marriage has ended.

For England and Wales, this usually means:

  • a Decree Absolute; or
  • a Final Order.

A Decree Absolute is the older final divorce order. It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.

A Final Order is the current final divorce order. It usually applies to divorce cases issued on or after 6 April 2022.

Both documents prove that the previous marriage has legally ended.

The Zimbabwe authority may ask for:

  • the original;
  • a certified copy;
  • an apostille;
  • a notarised copy;
  • supporting evidence.

Always check the exact requirement before submitting documents.

If You Do Not Have Your UK Divorce Document

Many British nationals no longer have a clear copy of their Decree Absolute or Final Order.

Some only hold:

  • an old scan;
  • a downloaded PDF;
  • a blurred photo;
  • a court email attachment;
  • an electronic divorce order;
  • an unclear copy from an old file.

This may cause problems if the Zimbabwe authority needs clear proof that your previous marriage has ended.

Ginkgo Advisory can help with the UK document stage.

We can identify and obtain the correct UK divorce document where available, then prepare it for overseas use.

Digital Divorce Orders Need Care

Modern UK divorce documents may exist as electronic court documents.

Some come as court PDFs. Others may come with a covering email from the court.

A Zimbabwe authority may not be familiar with the format of an English electronic divorce order.

A loose printout may not explain the document clearly. It may also fail to show the source trail.

A stronger route may include:

  • reviewing the UK court document;
  • checking whether it is a court PDF, HMCTS copy or paper order;
  • preparing solicitor certification;
  • arranging a UK FCDO apostille where needed;
  • arranging any further steps required for Zimbabwe.

This gives the Zimbabwe authority a clearer document chain.

Do You Need an Apostille for Zimbabwe?

You should check this with the Zimbabwe authority or the person conducting your ceremony.

Some UK documents used overseas may need legalisation with an apostille. Others may need solicitor certification, notarisation or local acceptance steps.

For a UK divorce document, the common route may be:

UK divorce document → solicitor certification → UK FCDO apostille → use in Zimbabwe where accepted

For a UK CNI, you should also ask whether the Zimbabwe authority requires an apostille before accepting it.

Ginkgo Advisory handles the UK document preparation and apostille side. You should confirm Zimbabwe local acceptance rules directly with the relevant authority.

If You Want to Marry Your Civil Partner

You cannot get a CNI while you are still in a civil partnership.

If you want to marry your civil partner, you must either:

  • convert the civil partnership into a marriage; or
  • end the civil partnership before getting married.

If you registered a same-sex civil partnership in the UK, you may be able to convert it into a marriage.

Check the law of that country if the civil partnership was registered elsewhere.

If You Travelled to Zimbabwe Without a UK CNI

If you travelled to Zimbabwe without a UK CNI, ask the person conducting your ceremony or the relevant local authority what you should do.

Do not assume that the issue can be solved locally.

You may need to:

  • return to the UK;
  • contact a UK register office;
  • provide alternative documents;
  • change the timing of your ceremony.

The correct route depends on the Zimbabwe authority handling your marriage.
