Do you need to use a UK document in Germany?

Ginkgo Advisory provides solicitor verification, enhanced solicitor certification and FCDO apostille services for Germany.

We assist with UK educational, company, court and personal documents. For urgent cases, our express e-Apostille option may take a few hours to one working day.

However, completion depends on document checks, submission times and FCDO processing.

Do UK Documents Need an Apostille for Germany?

Germany and the United Kingdom use the Hague Apostille system.

Therefore, a UK public document can usually receive an FCDO apostille instead of further legalisation by the German Embassy or Consulate.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office confirms that documents covered by the Hague Convention only need an apostille. It also states that applicants do not need to contact the German mission in the country that issued the document.

Even so, not every German application requires an apostille.

Requirements may differ between:

  • German universities
  • employers
  • immigration offices
  • registry offices
  • courts
  • banks
  • professional regulators
  • state and local authorities

Before starting, ask the German recipient whether it needs:

  • an original or certified copy
  • an e-Apostille or paper apostille
  • a German translation
  • separate apostilles for each document
  • an officially certified copy
  • a recently issued document

These checks can prevent delays and extra costs.

What Is Solicitor Certification?

Solicitor certification is a formal statement signed by a UK solicitor.

For example, the solicitor may confirm that a copy matches the original document.

Basic wording often states:

“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document.”

This statement may meet a simple certified-copy request. However, it does not confirm that the issuing organisation created a genuine document.

Therefore, a German authority, university or employer may ask for stronger proof.

What Is Enhanced Solicitor Certification?

Enhanced solicitor certification goes beyond basic true-copy wording.

First, our solicitor checks the document through a reliable source. The source may include a university, Companies House, a court record or an official online system.

Next, we prepare stronger wording, such as:

“I further certify that I have verified the authenticity of this document with the issuing institution.”

As a result, the German recipient receives both a certified copy and confirmation of the source check.

Solicitor Verification and Certification

Verification and certification are separate steps.

Verification means checking the document with its issuing source.

Certification means issuing the formal solicitor statement after that check.

For educational documents, we may use:

  • direct university confirmation
  • HEDD
  • Gradintelligence
  • Digitary
  • Parchment
  • an official university portal
  • a secure document-sharing service

Meanwhile, company checks may involve Companies House records.

Court-document checks can include the seal, case number, court email or official issue record.

Afterwards, our solicitor prepares and signs the certificate.

What Does the FCDO Apostille Confirm?

The FCDO checks the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It then issues an apostille when the document meets its legalisation rules.

GOV.UK also confirms that qualification certificates, contracts, powers of attorney and certified copies can be legalised after certification by a UK solicitor or notary.

However, the apostille does not confirm every fact inside the document.

For this reason, enhanced solicitor certification can add an important extra step.

The legalisation chain may look like this:

Source verification → enhanced solicitor certification → solicitor signature → FCDO apostille

Together, these stages create a clear document trail for use in Germany.

FCDO e-Apostille for Germany

The FCDO offers paper apostilles and e-Apostilles.

For the electronic route, a UK solicitor or notary must electronically sign the PDF. Once completed, the legalised file can be downloaded and shared digitally.

Our solicitor’s electronic signature is registered with the FCDO for e-Apostille purposes.

Consequently, we can prepare eligible PDFs for electronic legalisation.

Nevertheless, ask the German recipient whether it accepts:

  • a UK FCDO e-Apostille
  • an electronically signed PDF
  • a printed copy of the digital document
  • a paper apostille attached to an original

A paper apostille may work better when the authority requires a physical original.

Express e-Apostille Service for Germany

Straightforward cases may take a few hours to one working day when:

  • the document is clear and complete
  • verification has finished
  • the PDF qualifies for an e-Apostille
  • payment has arrived
  • the FCDO requires no extra checks

However, signature checks or further questions may extend the timeframe.

Therefore, urgent clients should send the document and the German recipient’s instructions as early as possible.

Educational Documents for Germany

UK educational documents may support:

  • German university admission
  • postgraduate study
  • employment
  • an EU Blue Card application
  • professional recognition
  • regulated professions
  • teacher recognition
  • healthcare registration
  • qualification checks

Common documents include a Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript.

A Degree Certificate confirms the award. In contrast, an Academic Transcript lists subjects, grades, credits and study dates.

Germany’s Federal Foreign Office lists university degrees among the public documents that may use the Hague Apostille route.

However, an apostille does not decide the German value of a UK qualification.

A German authority may also ask for:

  • an Anabin result
  • a ZAB Statement of Comparability
  • professional recognition
  • certified copies
  • German translations
  • direct confirmation from the university

ZAB Statement of Comparability

The Central Office for Foreign Education, known as ZAB, issues Statements of Comparability for foreign university degrees.

A Statement of Comparability explains how a foreign degree compares with the German education system. Government offices, embassies and employers can use it as proof of the qualification’s level.

For example, applicants may use a ZAB statement for:

  • an EU Blue Card application
  • employment
  • public-sector applications
  • proving the German level of a UK degree
  • immigration or residence procedures

However, the statement does not grant university admission or the right to work in a regulated profession.

It also does not convert foreign grades into German grades.

Therefore, an apostille and a ZAB assessment serve different purposes:

The apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal.

The ZAB statement explains the degree’s German level.

Professional Recognition in Germany

Germany regulates many professions.

Applicants may need formal recognition before they can work in roles such as:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • pharmacists
  • teachers
  • architects
  • certain engineers
  • legal professionals
  • skilled tradespeople

The competent authority compares the foreign qualification with the relevant German profession.

As a result, the required documents depend on:

  • the profession
  • the qualification
  • the German federal state
  • the place of work
  • the applicant’s circumstances

Germany’s official recognition portal advises applicants to check the exact document list with the responsible authority. It also notes that some authorities ask for certified copies.

UK Degree Verification for Germany

A basic certified copy may not satisfy every German recipient.

For stronger proof, our solicitor can verify a UK qualification where the university provides a reliable route.

The process may include:

  • reviewing the Degree Certificate
  • checking the Academic Transcript
  • using an official verification platform
  • contacting the university
  • preparing enhanced certification
  • electronically signing the PDF
  • arranging the FCDO apostille

This process records how we checked the qualification.

However, it does not replace a ZAB assessment or professional-recognition process where one is required.

Company Documents for Germany

UK company documents may support:

  • registering a German branch
  • forming a German subsidiary
  • opening a corporate bank account
  • commercial contracts
  • tenders
  • investment transactions
  • court proceedings
  • proof of directors or shareholders
  • appointing a German representative

Official Companies House certificates may qualify for direct FCDO legalisation.

However, company-created documents usually need solicitor certification first.

Examples include:

  • board resolutions
  • shareholder resolutions
  • company powers of attorney
  • registers of directors
  • registers of members
  • authorised signatory letters
  • commercial agreements

German company requirements may vary between commercial registers, banks, notaries and legal advisers.

Therefore, request a document checklist before starting.

Court Documents for Germany

UK court documents may need legalisation for:

  • divorce matters
  • probate
  • inheritance
  • civil claims
  • family proceedings
  • debt enforcement
  • commercial disputes

Examples include:

  • Final Orders
  • Decrees Absolute
  • court judgments
  • consent orders
  • Grants of Probate
  • Letters of Administration

The correct route depends on the document format.

For example, a court document with a wet-ink court seal may qualify for direct paper legalisation.

By contrast, an electronic court document may need solicitor verification and certification first.

Because German court and registry rules can vary, confirm the required format with the court, Standesamt, lawyer or notary.

Does Germany Require a German Translation?

German authorities often require documents in German.

The official Recognition in Germany portal states that applicants frequently need German translations. Publicly appointed or authorised translators should prepare them.

In addition, the competent authority decides whether a translation is necessary.

Some authorities may not accept work completed by a translator appointed outside Germany. Therefore, applicants should check the translator requirements before ordering the translation.

In Germany, authorised translators may use titles such as:

  • öffentlich bestellter Übersetzer
  • ermächtigter Übersetzer
  • vereidigter Übersetzer
  • beeidigter Übersetzer

Only authorised translators can add the formal statement that confirms the accuracy of an official translation in Germany.

Before arranging a translation, ask:

  • whether the recipient accepts English
  • whether it needs a German translation
  • whether a sworn translator must prepare it
  • whether the apostille also needs translation
  • whether every page and annex must be translated
  • whether the translator must be authorised in Germany

Certified Copies for German Applications

Some German authorities ask for officially certified copies rather than original documents.

Germany’s recognition portal advises applicants not to send originals when an authority asks for “original” documents. Instead, the applicant should normally submit officially certified copies.

However, a UK solicitor-certified copy is not automatically the same as a German amtlich beglaubigte Kopie.

Therefore, check whether the German recipient accepts:

  • a UK solicitor-certified copy
  • a notarised copy
  • an apostilled certified copy
  • certification by a German authority
  • certification by a German mission

The required form depends on the procedure.

Documents That Need a Paper Apostille

The FCDO does not issue an e-Apostille for certain document types.

Examples include:

  • UK birth certificates
  • marriage certificates
  • death certificates
  • civil partnership certificates
  • adoption certificates
  • ACRO Police Certificates
  • DBS certificates
  • fingerprint certificates
  • ACCA membership certificates

These documents normally require a paper apostille.

In addition, a German authority may request a physical document even when the FCDO offers an electronic route.

Separate or Combined Apostilles?

Several related documents can sometimes form one certified PDF.

However, this approach does not suit every German application.

Separate apostilles may work better when:

  • the Degree Certificate and Transcript have different uses
  • a recognition authority wants separate files
  • each document will go to a different body
  • the recipient requests individual apostilles
  • the documents come from different issuers

Before submission, confirm whether the German recipient accepts one combined file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Germany accept an FCDO apostille?

Yes. Germany and the United Kingdom use the Hague Apostille system. Therefore, a UK document covered by the Convention normally needs an apostille rather than further German consular legalisation.

Does Germany accept an FCDO e-Apostille?

A UK e-Apostille may suit digital applications. However, you should confirm that the specific German authority accepts an electronically signed PDF.

Is true-copy certification enough?

It depends on the purpose. Some German recipients may also want confirmation that the solicitor checked the document with its issuer.

Can you verify a UK Degree Certificate?

Yes, where the university provides a reliable verification route.

Does an apostille replace a ZAB Statement of Comparability?

No. An apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal. A ZAB statement explains how the foreign university degree compares with German qualifications.

Can you apostille an Academic Transcript?

Yes. We can review, verify and certify eligible Academic Transcripts before arranging the FCDO apostille.

Does Germany require a German translation?

Often, yes. The competent authority decides whether a translation is needed and which translator it will accept.

Is a UK solicitor-certified copy accepted in Germany?

Sometimes. However, some German procedures require an officially certified copy in a specific German format.

Can an ACRO Police Certificate receive an e-Apostille?

No. An ACRO Police Certificate must use the FCDO paper apostille route.

Can several documents share one apostille?

Sometimes. However, the German recipient may request a separate apostille for each document.
