West London Institute of Higher Education was a recognised UK institution that gave awards between 1976 and 1995. Brunel University London now verifies its qualifications through HEDD.
Ginkgo Advisory can arrange HEDD verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available after verification and certification are complete.
Quick answer
West London Institute of Higher Education qualifications can be verified through HEDD.
The usual route is:
HEDD verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required
The current HEDD degree enquiry fee is £17. HEDD can check the award, grade or classification and attendance dates held by Brunel University London.
HEDD verification requirements
The candidate must provide a HEDD consent form that:
- names Brunel University London;
- is signed by hand;
- is dated within the previous three months; and
- is uploaded as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.
The graduate’s email address must also be provided. After the HEDD request is submitted, the graduate should register and activate an account through Brunel’s VerifyAward service. HEDD will then send a connection request through the portal.
The verification request should include:
- the candidate’s name during study;
- any previous name;
- course and qualification;
- attendance dates;
- award year;
- classification; and
- student number, where available.
HEDD warns that an unsuccessful or cancelled Brunel enquiry may not receive a full refund.
West London Institute and Brunel University
West London Institute of Higher Education was formed from predecessor institutions including Borough Road College, Maria Grey College and higher education departments associated with Chiswick Polytechnic.
Its merger with Brunel began in February 1995. Students then received Brunel University certificates referring to study through Brunel University College, and full integration followed in 1997.
Historic documents may therefore name:
- West London Institute of Higher Education;
- Brunel University College;
- Brunel University;
- University of London;
- CNAA;
- BTEC or City & Guilds; or
- another awarding body.
The organisation printed as the awarding body determines the correct replacement-certificate route.
Transcripts and replacement certificates
Brunel provides replacement transcripts and certificates through its Awards Team.
A printed replacement transcript currently costs £60. Older records may require manual review, and the level of detail available will depend on the programme and study period.
Replacement certificates can also be requested from Brunel. The current published fee is £60, and only one original certificate may remain in circulation.
Where the original qualification was awarded by the University of London, CNAA or another organisation, that awarding body may need to provide the replacement document.
Solicitor verification and certification
A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.
It does not independently prove that the candidate obtained the qualification.
Our enhanced service reviews the document against reliable evidence, such as:
- a HEDD verification;
- a VerifyAward record;
- an official Brunel transcript;
- a replacement certificate;
- a university confirmation; or
- another awarding-body record.
Where the evidence supports it, our solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.
FCDO apostille
After academic verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not independently verify the underlying qualification.
The recommended process is:
academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille
Our 2 working day express FCDO apostille option covers the apostille stage only. It excludes HEDD processing, university searches, transcript production, replacement certificates, delivery and embassy legalisation.
Embassy legalisation
Documents intended for a destination outside the Hague Apostille Convention may require further embassy or consular legalisation.
A typical process is:
solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation
The receiving authority may also require an official transcript, verification letter, certified translation or identity document.
