Do you need a UK marriage certificate for official use in the United Arab Emirates?
Ginkgo Advisory provides a managed UK marriage certificate attestation service for the UAE. We can obtain an official certificate where required, arrange an express paper FCDO Apostille, coordinate the UAE Embassy in London digital attestation process and review the completed UAE MoFA attestation.
The current route is:
Official UK marriage certificate → paper FCDO Apostille → UAE Embassy in London and UAE MoFA digital attestation
The UAE Embassy requires UK-issued documents to complete FCDO legalisation first. It also requires official personal documents, including marriage certificates, in their original form.
Need a UK marriage certificate attested for the UAE?
We can manage the process from beginning to end.
Our service can include:
- Review of your existing UK marriage certificate
- Search for an England or Wales marriage record
- Application for a fresh official GRO or register-office certificate
- Priority certificate ordering where available
- Express paper FCDO Apostille
- UAE Embassy in London digital attestation
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation
- Review of the completed digital attestation
- Secure UK or international return delivery
Clients living outside the United Kingdom do not normally need to obtain the certificate themselves. Where appropriate, we can locate the England or Wales record, order an official copy and move it directly into the paper Apostille process.

What is UK marriage certificate attestation for the UAE?
UK marriage certificate attestation is the process of authenticating the certificate so that a UAE authority can accept it for an official purpose.
The process contains two main legalisation stages.
First, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office attaches an Apostille to the official marriage certificate.
Next, the UAE Embassy in London and UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs complete the UAE digital attestation.
Therefore, an FCDO Apostille and a UAE attestation perform different functions.
FCDO Apostille
The Apostille confirms the public origin of the UK certificate. In particular, the FCDO checks the relevant registrar’s signature, stamp or seal.
UAE digital attestation
The UAE attestation authenticates the apostilled document for official use in the Emirates.
The UAE Embassy now issues this stage digitally. Once complete, the applicant receives a digitally attested PDF by email, while the approved service provider returns the original paper certificate separately. The Embassy states that the digital document is ready for use within the UAE.
Do I need a solicitor to certify a UK marriage certificate?
Usually, no.
An official marriage certificate issued by the General Register Office or a UK local register office is a public-registry document. Therefore, an eligible original certificate can normally proceed directly to the FCDO.
GOV.UK specifically includes marriage certificates among the public-registry documents that the Legalisation Office can legalise.
This differs from documents such as:
- Degree certificates
- Powers of Attorney
- Private agreements
- Passport copies
- Company resolutions
Those documents can require solicitor or notarial certification before the FCDO stage.
Although a solicitor does not usually need to certify an official marriage certificate, our solicitor-led review helps confirm that you have the correct document before you incur Apostille and UAE attestation charges.
The UAE Embassy requires the original marriage certificate
The UAE Embassy in London requires official personal documents such as marriage, birth and death certificates in their original form.
Therefore, a normal photocopy or scanned PDF cannot replace the official paper certificate for the UAE attestation process.
A scan remains useful for our initial review. However, the actual process requires the eligible physical certificate.
What counts as an official marriage certificate?
For a marriage registered in England or Wales, this will normally be:
- An official certificate issued at the time of registration
- An official certified copy issued by the General Register Office
- An official certified copy issued by the local register office
A ceremonial certificate, unofficial copy or online scan may not qualify.
Lost your original UK marriage certificate?
We can often obtain a fresh official copy.
For marriages registered in England or Wales, we can:
- Review the information you have
- Search for the relevant marriage record
- Identify the likely GRO entry
- Order an official certified copy
- Check the certificate when it arrives
- Arrange the paper FCDO Apostille
- Proceed to UAE digital attestation
The General Register Office offers a priority service. At present, it dispatches eligible priority orders on the next working day when the order reaches it before the official 4:00 pm cut-off. Courier or postal transit remains additional.
Can you find the marriage record without a GRO reference?
Often, yes.
A GRO reference helps, but it is not always essential.
Useful information includes:
- Full names of both parties at the time of marriage
- Maiden name or previous surname
- Approximate marriage date
- Town or county
- Church, venue or register office
- Registration district
- Alternative spellings
- Names or occupations of parents
- Any older document that refers to the marriage
The General Register Office holds marriage records for England and Wales from July 1837. A targeted record search can identify the likely entry by year, quarter, district, volume and page.
Does a UK marriage certificate need a paper Apostille?
Yes.
A UK marriage certificate cannot receive an FCDO e-Apostille.
GOV.UK excludes marriage certificates, birth certificates, death certificates and other General Register Office documents from the electronic Apostille service. The physical certificate must therefore use the paper-based route.
The correct sequence is:
Official paper marriage certificate → paper FCDO Apostille → UAE digital attestation
An electronic scan can support the initial review, but it cannot replace the original certificate during the Apostille and UAE stages.
Express FCDO Apostille for a UK marriage certificate
Ginkgo Advisory offers an express paper Apostille option for eligible UK marriage certificates.
Our express target is around two working days for the managed FCDO stage after the eligible original reaches us and passes our initial check.
This target applies to the Apostille stage only.
It does not include:
- Marriage-record research
- Production of a replacement certificate
- Delivery of the certificate to us
- UAE digital attestation
- Courier return
Therefore, we confirm the likely complete timetable after reviewing your certificate, destination and deadline.
UAE Embassy in London digital attestation
After the FCDO attaches the paper Apostille, the marriage certificate can proceed to the UAE stage.
The UAE Embassy in London now provides digital attestation for UK-issued documents.
However, the process still requires the physical original. The applicant completes the online application, and a MoFA-approved service provider arranges collection of the document.
Once the authorities complete the process:
- The UAE Embassy attests the document digitally
- UAE MoFA completes its digital attestation
- The applicant receives the digitally attested copy by email
- The service provider returns the original certificate
The current official guidance describes a typical UAE digital-attestation processing period of approximately 2–3 working days.
Courier collection and return time remain additional.
Do I need a separate MoFA stamp after the UAE Embassy stage?
The current London digital workflow includes both:
- UAE Embassy in London attestation
- UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation
The Embassy states that the emailed digital document has completed both stages and is ready for use within the UAE.
Accordingly, applicants should not normally expect to obtain a separate physical MoFA stamp in Dubai or Abu Dhabi after receiving the completed digital attestation.
However, you must retain and submit the digitally attested PDF. The returned paper certificate alone may not display the UAE authentication.
Does a newly attested marriage certificate receive a pink stamp?
No old-style physical pink stamp should normally be expected under the current digital process.
Older UAE-attested documents often carry physical Embassy stickers or MoFA endorsements.
By contrast, the current London process produces a digital UAE attestation.
The key evidence now includes:
- Digitally attested PDF
- Attestation Reference Number
- Issued Date
- Online UAE MoFA verification
Therefore, the absence of an old physical sticker does not mean the attestation is incomplete.
How to verify the UAE digital attestation
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides an official verification facility.
You will normally need:
- The Attestation Reference Number
- The Issued Date
After completion, keep:
- The full UAE digital attestation PDF
- The attestation reference
- The issue date
- The verification result
- The email through which the attestation was issued
These records may help when you submit the certificate to a UAE immigration authority, court, bank, employer or other organisation.
Our complete UAE marriage certificate attestation process
Step 1 – Send us a scan
First, send a clear colour scan of your marriage certificate.
Also provide:
- Intended use in the UAE
- Receiving authority
- Required completion date
- Country for final return delivery
We can usually identify whether the document appears suitable before you send the original.
Step 2 – Confirm the certificate type
Next, we check whether you hold an official certificate.
If you only have a scan, damaged document or unofficial copy, we can assess whether to order a fresh official certificate.
Step 3 – Obtain a replacement where necessary
Where the marriage took place in England or Wales, we can research the record and order an official certified copy.
Priority ordering may reduce the certificate-production period.
Step 4 – Check the physical certificate
Once the certificate reaches us, we check:
- Names
- Marriage date
- Registration details
- Physical condition
- Registrar information
- Eligibility for the paper Apostille
This check reduces the risk of sending an unsuitable document to the FCDO.
Step 5 – Arrange the express FCDO Apostille
We then submit the eligible original certificate for a paper Apostille.
Our express managed target is around two working days after receipt and acceptance of the certificate.
Step 6 – Arrange UAE digital attestation
After the FCDO stage, we prepare the document for the UAE Embassy and MoFA digital workflow.
Where the portal requires a personal UAE Pass login, we guide the applicant through that part of the application. We then coordinate the physical-document collection and monitor the document process.
Step 7 – Review the completed digital attestation
When the UAE authorities issue the digital document, we check:
- Document holder’s names
- Marriage-certificate details
- Digital attestation reference
- Issue date
- Completeness of the PDF
Step 8 – Secure return
Finally, the approved provider returns the original certificate.
We can also arrange onward UK or international delivery where required.
How long does UK marriage certificate attestation for the UAE take?
The total time depends on the starting point.
You already hold the official certificate
A typical case includes:
- Initial document review
- Delivery of the certificate to us
- Express FCDO Apostille
- UAE digital attestation
- Courier return
Our express FCDO stage targets around two working days after receipt. The UAE Embassy currently states that digital attestation usually takes around 2–3 working days.
Courier time remains additional.
You need a fresh marriage certificate
The complete period also includes:
- Record search
- GRO or register-office application
- Certificate production
- Delivery to us
A priority GRO certificate can leave the GRO on the next working day when ordered before the official cut-off. However, record uncertainty or missing information can extend the search.
The receiving authority has extra requirements
Another UAE authority may request:
- Recently issued certificate
- Arabic translation
- Additional identity documents
- Supporting family records
- Separate divorce or name-change evidence
Those requirements can add further stages.
What can delay UAE marriage certificate attestation?
Common problems include:
- Sending a photocopy instead of an official certificate
- Attempting to use an e-Apostille
- Sending a laminated certificate
- Using an unofficial ceremonial certificate
- Ordering the wrong marriage record
- Name differences across the certificate and passport
- Missing pages
- Damaged registrar details
- Bundling several documents under one Apostille
- Incorrect UAE digital application details
- Incomplete courier information
- Applying through the wrong UAE mission
An initial scan review can identify many of these issues before the original enters the process.
Laminated marriage certificates
The UAE Embassy does not accept laminated documents for attestation.
Therefore, do not laminate your marriage certificate before legalisation.
If the certificate has already been laminated, contact us before arranging the Apostille. We can assess whether ordering a fresh official copy provides the safest route.
Can several family documents share one Apostille?
No, not for the UAE Embassy process.
The UAE Embassy states that it does not accept documents that have been Apostilled in a bundle. Instead, each document should receive separate legalisation.
For example, the following should not automatically share one Apostille:
- Marriage certificate
- Birth certificate
- Divorce order
- Consent letter
- Power of Attorney
Each underlying document may require its own Apostille and UAE attestation.
Marriage certificate and birth certificate for a UAE family application
A family or dependant application may require more than one civil-status document.
For example, the authority may request:
- Marriage certificate
- Child’s birth certificate
- Passport copies
- Consent document
- Divorce order from a previous marriage
- Change-of-name evidence
Because the UAE Embassy rejects Apostille bundles, each official certificate should be assessed separately.
We can review the complete family-document set before processing begins.
Does the UAE require an Arabic translation?
The UAE Embassy’s London digital-attestation guidance does not state that every UK marriage certificate must have an Arabic translation before attestation.
However, the organisation receiving the document in the UAE may request a translation for the underlying application.
Therefore, confirm:
- Whether translation is required
- Whether it must be completed before or after attestation
- Whether the authority needs Arabic only or a bilingual version
- Whether a UAE-certified translator must prepare it
Where possible, obtain the receiving authority’s instructions before commissioning the translation.
Can an old UK marriage certificate be used?
Possibly.
The FCDO authenticates the certificate’s public origin. It does not impose a general rule that every marriage certificate must have been issued recently.
However, the UAE receiving authority may set its own issue-date requirement.
For example, an immigration, court or civil-status application may ask for a recently issued official copy.
Therefore, tell us:
- When the certificate was issued
- Why you need it
- Which UAE authority will receive it
We can then assess whether using the existing certificate or ordering a fresh copy is more sensible.
Does an attested marriage certificate prove that the couple is still married?
No.
A marriage certificate proves that a marriage entry was registered.
The Apostille authenticates the certificate’s public origin.
UAE digital attestation then authenticates the document for UAE use.
None of these stages proves that the marriage has never ended through:
- Divorce
- Annulment
- Dissolution
- Court order
Where present marital status matters, the UAE authority may request additional evidence.
A final order or decree absolute may be necessary if the marriage later ended.
When might a UAE authority request an attested UK marriage certificate?
Common uses can include:
- Spouse or dependant immigration applications
- Family sponsorship
- Registration of a foreign marriage
- Residence applications
- Civil-status updates
- Name or identity record changes
- Court proceedings
- Inheritance and probate matters
- Banking or property transactions
- Insurance or pension administration
- School or healthcare registration for dependants
- Evidence requested by a UAE government body
The exact requirement depends on the authority and purpose.
Marriage certificate for use in Dubai
A UK marriage certificate intended for a Dubai authority generally follows the same UK authentication route:
Official UK marriage certificate → paper FCDO Apostille → UAE Embassy London and MoFA digital attestation
The Dubai authority may then ask for the digital attestation PDF, Arabic translation or additional application documents.
Marriage certificate for use in Abu Dhabi
For Abu Dhabi use, the core legalisation chain remains the same.
However, the final receiving organisation may have its own document-age, translation or submission rules.
Therefore, send us any written instructions received from the Abu Dhabi authority.
Marriage certificate for use elsewhere in the UAE
The same UAE digital attestation can support official use in:
- Sharjah
- Ajman
- Ras Al Khaimah
- Fujairah
- Umm Al Quwain
Nevertheless, the individual authority decides its underlying application requirements.
Can overseas clients use this service?
Yes.
You do not need to travel to the United Kingdom simply to obtain and legalise an England or Wales marriage certificate.
Most instructions can be managed remotely.
Overseas clients can send:
- Marriage details
- Clear scan of an existing certificate
- Passport details where later required
- UAE purpose
- Delivery address
- Deadline
We can then manage the UK certificate and Apostille stages, coordinate the UAE attestation process and arrange secure return.
Scotland and Northern Ireland marriage certificates
Scotland and Northern Ireland use different registration systems.
Therefore, the England and Wales GRO ordering process does not apply to those certificates.
We can still review:
- Scottish marriage certificates
- Northern Irish marriage certificates
- Existing FCDO Apostilles
- UAE attestation requirements
Send a complete scan before ordering a replacement or Apostille.
Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories
Documents from Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man or a British Overseas Territory do not automatically follow the ordinary England and Wales route.
The UAE Embassy requires those documents to complete the appropriate authentication in their own jurisdiction first. The correct further UK and UAE stages then depend on where the document originated.
Therefore, confirm the issuing jurisdiction before sending the original.
Common UAE marriage certificate attestation mistakes
Using a scan instead of the original
The UAE Embassy requires official marriage certificates in original form.
Requesting an e-Apostille
The FCDO does not issue e-Apostilles for marriage certificates.
Obtaining unnecessary solicitor certification
An eligible official public-registry certificate can normally proceed directly to the FCDO.
Sending a laminated certificate
The UAE Embassy does not accept laminated documents.
Bundling several documents
Each document should normally receive its own Apostille.
Expecting a physical UAE stamp
The current London process issues digital UAE attestation.
Losing the digital PDF
The digital file is the key UAE authentication record. Keep it securely.
Ignoring the final authority’s requirements
Attestation does not replace requirements for translations, recent copies or supporting documents.

Frequently asked questions
What is the process for UK marriage certificate attestation for UAE?
The standard route is:

Does a UK marriage certificate need solicitor certification before the Apostille?
Usually not.
An official marriage certificate is a public-registry document and can normally proceed directly to the FCDO.
Does the UAE Embassy accept a photocopy of a marriage certificate?
No ordinary photocopy should replace the official document.
The UAE Embassy requires marriage certificates and other official personal records in their original form.
Can I use a certified copy?
An official certified copy issued by the GRO or local register office is an official certificate.
A solicitor-certified photocopy is different and should not be treated as a substitute for the official certificate where the Embassy requires the original personal document.
Can a UK marriage certificate receive an e-Apostille?
No.
The FCDO excludes marriage certificates and other GRO documents from its e-Apostille service.
Do I need a paper Apostille?
Yes.
The original paper marriage certificate must follow the paper-based FCDO route.
Does the UAE still issue a pink stamp?
The current UAE Embassy in London process is digital.
The applicant receives a digitally attested PDF rather than relying on the older physical UAE sticker.
Does the London process include UAE MoFA attestation?
Yes.
The UAE Embassy states that the digital document receives both UAE Embassy and UAE MoFA attestation and is then ready for use within the UAE.
Do I need another MoFA stamp in Dubai?
Not normally under the current London digital workflow.
However, you must provide the completed digital attestation PDF to the receiving authority.

Yes, for marriages registered in England or Wales.

Yes.
We regularly assist overseas clients. You can manage the instruction remotely without travelling to Britain.
Can you return the document to Dubai or Abu Dhabi?
Yes.
We can arrange tracked international return delivery, subject to the destination and current courier service.

However, the final UAE authority may request a certified Arabic translation.
Can I attest my marriage certificate and birth certificate together?
They should not share one bundled Apostille.
The UAE Embassy requires separate documents to receive separate legalisation.
