University of Oxford Degree Certificate for China: Our Solicitor Certification, UK FCDO Apostille and e-Apostille Services

Ginkgo Advisory

Ginkgo Advisory provides University of Oxford degree certificate services for use in mainland China, including our solicitor certification, UK FCDO apostille and UK FCDO e-Apostille services. We review your academic records and the receiving organisation’s instructions before identifying the appropriate preparation and document format.

You may need an Oxford degree certificate for a China work permit application, employment checks, further study or professional registration. The documents requested can differ. Send us the actual checklist so that the service covers the degree certificate, academic transcript or supporting letter that your recipient needs.

Our Oxford degree certification and apostille services for China

Our London-based team can assess the following services individually or as part of one document-preparation enquiry:

  • Our UK solicitor certification: review the document and available verification evidence, then prepare suitable certification describing the checks completed.
  • UK FCDO paper apostille: arrange preparation, submission and return of the physical document.
  • UK FCDO e-Apostille: prepare solicitor electronic certification and manage submission for an eligible document, with the completed electronic file returned digitally.

Explore our solicitor-certified copy service, UK FCDO apostille service and UK FCDO e-Apostille service. We arrange the certification and application; the FCDO issues the apostille.

Does an Oxford degree need Chinese Embassy legalisation?

The Chinese Embassy’s notice on the Apostille Convention explains that, from 7 November 2023, UK public documents covered by the Convention can be used in mainland China with a UK apostille without further Chinese consular legalisation. The Embassy and Consulates in the UK ceased providing the corresponding legalisation service.

Older instructions may still refer to Chinese Embassy attestation or degree legalisation for China. For a covered UK document, an additional Embassy stamp is no longer the normal authentication step. The recipient’s requirements for the underlying academic evidence, certification, language and submission format still need to be identified.

Oxford degree certificates, transcripts and confirmation letters

Degree certificate and conferral

Oxford’s degree certificate guidance explains that a degree certificate follows formal conferral, either in person or in absentia. A digital Degree Confirmation Letter may be available where a certificate is not yet available. Before preparing an alternative letter for China, establish whether the recipient accepts it for the particular application.

Replacement certificate requests must be made by graduates themselves. If your name has changed since graduation, tell us about the difference between the academic record and your current identification so the supporting evidence can be assessed.

Academic transcripts and research degrees

A certificate establishes the award; a transcript records academic results. Oxford’s transcript guidance describes exceptions for research degrees, older records and certain courses. A DPhil graduate, for example, should not assume a standard taught-course transcript exists. If a transcript is requested but unavailable, identify the official alternative and obtain the recipient’s instructions.

Our solicitor certification and Oxford degree verification

A certified copy and an academic authenticity check concern different evidence. Copy certification records the comparison undertaken. University verification concerns the academic record itself. Our solicitor can assess the available evidence and prepare wording that reflects the work completed, including any authenticity verification specifically agreed.

Oxford’s eDocuments service offers eligible graduates official digital records, secure sharing and QR-based verification. The documents available depend on the programme, study dates and stage of completion. Provide an official sharing or verification route where available, together with any required consent.

The FCDO legalisation guidance includes qualification certificates certified by a UK solicitor or notary. Our initial review should establish whether solicitor certification meets the particular submission or whether the instructions specify a notary or another form of evidence. A certified copy should accurately describe the material examined; any additional verification should be identified separately.

UK FCDO paper apostille or e-Apostille for China?

Both routes are available for assessment. For the electronic route, the FCDO requires a PDF electronically signed by a UK solicitor or notary. A scanned signature or an unsigned Oxford PDF does not, by itself, meet that requirement.

The HCCH Apostille guidance states that validly issued e-Apostilles have the same Convention standing as paper apostilles and must be recognised by Contracting Parties. Electronic form alone is not a basis for refusal. For your China submission, we also check how the recipient will receive and validate the electronic file and whether the underlying document matches its checklist.

Service What you receive What to clarify for the submission
Solicitor certification The agreed certification of the document or copy examined. Required evidence, certification wording and any separate authenticity check.
UK FCDO paper apostille A physical document bearing the attached apostille. Original or certified-copy requirements, delivery and presentation arrangements.
UK FCDO e-Apostille The completed electronic document for digital sharing. Document eligibility, PDF handling and the recipient’s verification process.

An Oxford eCertificate and an FCDO e-Apostille serve different purposes. The University issues the academic record; the FCDO authenticates the relevant official signature, capacity or seal in the document chain. Keep the completed electronic file intact for verification. A printout does not preserve its electronic signature or become a paper apostille.

Oxford also flags encryption restrictions on saved eDocuments that can affect secure-portal uploads. Its approved sharing and printing facilities should be considered during preparation. Digital availability alone does not establish that a file is ready for the FCDO electronic route.

Must the degree certificate and transcript both be apostilled?

Ask the Chinese employer, university, professional body or immigration adviser to specify each document and its required treatment. A request for an academic transcript alongside the degree certificate does not automatically establish that both need an apostille.

Where both records need authentication, clarify whether separate apostilles are required or whether an appropriately certified set is suitable. Combining documents into one PDF does not resolve that question. Include all transcript pages and existing attachments when requesting our review.

China work permits, translations and qualification recognition

The official work permit overview published by Beijing lists highest-degree or related qualification evidence among the supporting documents and recognises apostille authentication for Convention countries. That overview should be read alongside the checklist applicable to the employer and applicant.

Tell us the destination city, intended role, application stage and submitting organisation. If the instructions mention a Chinese translation, academic recognition, equivalency assessment or professional registration, provide those instructions too. Identify whether a translation must cover the certificate, certification statement and apostille, and who must prepare or endorse it.

Our UK document service can support the document-preparation stage. Academic recognition and immigration decisions remain separate processes. The scope of any local advice or additional service should be clear before work begins.

How to arrange our Oxford degree service for China

  1. Send the records and instructions. Include clear copies, the complete checklist, any existing certification and your deadline.
  2. We review the evidence. The review identifies the award, available verification route and proposed paper or electronic format.
  3. Confirm the quotation. The scope should identify solicitor certification, any agreed verification, FCDO fees and delivery or electronic return.
  4. Certification and FCDO submission. Once the required evidence is ready, we prepare the agreed document and manage its application.
  5. Receive the completed document. We arrange the agreed return method so you can submit it with any other required materials.

Timing depends on record availability, verification, preparation, FCDO processing and any physical delivery. A timeframe for the FCDO stage should not be treated as the timetable for the complete service. Request an estimate for your actual documents, location and deadline.

Oxford degree apostille for China: frequently asked questions

Can your solicitor certify my University of Oxford degree for China?

We can assess the certificate and supporting evidence for suitable solicitor certification. Send the receiving organisation’s wording so that the certification and any additional authenticity check can be scoped correctly.

Can I use an FCDO e-Apostille in China?

Valid e-Apostilles are recognised under the Convention. For your particular submission, check the underlying document requirements and arrangements for delivering and validating the electronic file. We can review the proposed UK preparation.

Do I still need Chinese Embassy attestation after the apostille?

For UK public documents covered by the Convention and used in mainland China, the UK apostille replaces the former consular legalisation stage. If a checklist still asks for an Embassy stamp, request clarification against the Embassy’s published notice.

Can you work from a scan, or do you need my original certificate?

A readable scan is suitable for the initial enquiry. What is needed for certification depends on the evidence, verification and required document format. We will identify the material needed after review.

Does an Oxford digital certificate already include an apostille?

University digital verification and FCDO authentication are separate services. Send the complete file and any attachments so we can identify what has already been done and what the recipient is requesting.

Do I need a transcript as well as the degree certificate?

That depends on the particular submission. Ask whether a transcript is needed and whether it must also be apostilled. Oxford transcript availability varies by course and study dates.

Does the apostille guarantee a China work permit or recognition of my degree?

The apostille authenticates the relevant official signature or seal. It does not decide the academic standing of the award, the suitability of the applicant or the outcome of an immigration application.

Can I enquire while I am already in China?

Yes. Tell us where your documents are held, which official records you can share and whether you need digital return or physical delivery. We can then assess the practical arrangements.
