British Nationals Getting Married in Slovakia
If you are a British national planning to get married in Slovakia, you must follow the Slovak marriage process.
Your marriage will usually be recognised in the UK if:
- you follow the correct process under Slovak law; and
- the marriage would be allowed under UK law.
The Slovak register office, local authority, venue or person conducting your ceremony can confirm which documents you need.
The correct route depends on where you live.
If you live in the UK, you usually need a Certificate of No Impediment, also known as a CNI, from a UK Register Office.
If you live overseas, the Slovak register office may ask for an affirmation of marital status signed before a local notary public in Slovakia.
Check With the Slovak Register Office First
Before arranging travel, ceremony dates or UK documents, contact the relevant Slovak register office.
The register office can confirm:
- whether you can marry in Slovakia;
- whether you need a UK CNI;
- whether you need a Slovak notary affirmation;
- which documents you need;
- whether your UK documents need an apostille;
- whether your UK documents need Slovak translation;
- whether your divorce document needs extra evidence;
- whether your documents must be issued within a certain period;
- how the marriage will be registered.
This step matters because the Slovak register office will decide what it needs for your case.
If You Live in the UK: Get a CNI From a UK Register Office
If you live in the UK, British nationals usually need a Certificate of No Impediment for marriage in Slovakia.
A CNI is a legal document. It confirms that no legal barrier to your marriage has been shown to exist.
To get a CNI, you should:
- book an appointment at a UK register office;
- tell them you need a CNI to get married abroad;
- give notice at the appointment;
- check that your details match your passport;
- ask the Slovak authority how recent the CNI must be.
Your UK CNI should usually be accepted in Slovakia. However, you should still check the timing and format with the Slovak register office before you apply.
Names on the CNI Must Match Your Passports
Your name and your partner’s name on the CNI should match the names on your passports.
This includes middle names.
Before you give notice, check:
- your full name;
- your partner’s full name;
- all middle names;
- dates of birth;
- passport details;
- previous name details, if relevant.
A mismatch may delay the Slovak marriage process.
It may also create questions if the Slovak authority compares the CNI with your passport, birth certificate or divorce document.
If You Live Overseas: Slovak Notary Affirmation
If you live outside the UK, the Slovak register office may ask for an affirmation of marital status.
You usually sign this document before a local notary public in Slovakia.
The affirmation may confirm:
- your identity;
- your nationality;
- your current marital status;
- whether you have been married before;
- whether any previous marriage has legally ended;
- your intention to marry in Slovakia.
Ask the Slovak register office what exact wording and format they require before signing anything.
Local Notary Public in Slovakia
The Slovak overseas-resident route may involve a local notary public.
Before the notary appointment, ask what documents you need to bring.
The notary may need to see:
- your UK passport;
- proof of address;
- birth certificate;
- divorce document, if previously married;
- death certificate, if widowed;
- name change evidence;
- Slovak translations;
- apostilled UK documents.
Do not sign the affirmation too early if the Slovak authority expects you to sign it in front of the notary.
A mismatch in names, dates or document details can delay the marriage process.
If You Travelled to Slovakia Without a UK CNI
If you live in the UK and travelled to Slovakia without a UK CNI, ask the person conducting your ceremony or the relevant Slovak authority what you should do.
Do not assume that the issue can be fixed locally.
You may need to:
- contact a UK register office;
- return to the UK to give notice;
- delay the ceremony;
- provide alternative documents, if the Slovak authority accepts them.
The correct route depends on the Slovak register office handling your case.
Marriage Registration in Slovakia
If you marry in Slovakia, your marriage will be registered in Slovakia.
It will not be added to UK marriage records.
You cannot register the Slovak marriage later at:
- a UK register office;
- a British Embassy;
- a British Consulate.
You should keep your Slovak marriage certificate as evidence of your marriage.
If you want to use the certificate outside Slovakia, you may need:
- a translation;
- an apostille;
- or further legalisation, depending on the destination country.
Other Documents for Marriage in Slovakia
A CNI or notary affirmation may not be the only document you need.
The Slovak register office may also ask for:
- your UK passport;
- your partner’s passport or national identity card;
- birth certificates;
- proof of address;
- proof of nationality;
- proof of marital status;
- proof that any previous marriage has ended;
- apostilled documents;
- certified Slovak translations.
You should check the exact list before you book travel or confirm a ceremony date.
If You Were Previously Married
If you were previously married, the Slovak register office may ask for proof that the previous marriage has ended.
For England and Wales, this usually means:
- a Decree Absolute; or
- a Final Order.
A Decree Absolute is the older final divorce order. It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.
A Final Order is the current final divorce order. It usually applies to divorce cases issued on or after 6 April 2022.
Both documents prove that the previous marriage has legally ended.
The Slovak authority may ask for:
- the original;
- a certified copy;
- an apostille;
- a notarised copy;
- supporting court evidence;
- certified Slovak translation.
Always check the exact requirement before submitting documents.
If You Do Not Have Your UK Divorce Document
Many British nationals no longer have a clear copy of their Decree Absolute or Final Order.
Some only hold:
- an old scan;
- a downloaded PDF;
- a blurred photo;
- a court email attachment;
- an electronic divorce order;
- an unclear copy from an old file.
This may cause problems if the Slovak register office needs clear proof that your previous marriage has ended.
Ginkgo Advisory can help with the UK document stage.
We can identify and obtain the correct UK divorce document where available, then prepare it for overseas use.
Digital Divorce Orders Need Care
Modern UK divorce documents may exist as electronic court documents.
Some come as court PDFs. Others may come with a covering email from the court.
A Slovak register office may not be familiar with the format of an English electronic divorce order.
A loose printout may not explain the document clearly. It may also fail to show the source trail.
A stronger route may include:
- reviewing the UK court document;
- checking whether it is a court PDF, HMCTS copy or paper order;
- obtaining supporting court evidence where available;
- preparing solicitor certification;
- arranging a UK FCDO apostille where needed;
- arranging Slovak translation if required.
This gives the Slovak authority a clearer document chain.
Do You Need an Apostille for Slovakia?
You should check this with the Slovak register office or the person conducting your ceremony.
Some UK documents used in Slovakia may need a UK FCDO apostille. Others may need solicitor certification, notarisation, translation or local acceptance steps.
For a UK divorce document, the common route may be:
UK divorce document → solicitor certification → UK FCDO apostille → Slovak translation if required → use in Slovakia
This route can help where the document is:
- a court PDF;
- an electronic Final Order;
- an unclear scan;
- a certified copy;
- a document that needs a clearer source trail.
For a UK CNI, ask the Slovak authority whether it needs an apostille before use.
Ginkgo Advisory handles the UK document preparation and apostille side. You should confirm Slovak local acceptance rules directly with the relevant authority.
If the Divorce Took Place Outside the UK
If your divorce took place outside the UK, the Slovak authority may ask for extra evidence.
This may include proof that:
- the divorce was valid in the country where it took place;
- you or your ex-partner were resident there at the time;
- you or your ex-partner were a national of that country at the time;
- the document came from the relevant court or authority.
If you only have a digital document, you may need further evidence from the issuing court or authority.
Check this early. Missing evidence can delay the Slovak marriage process.
If Your Former Spouse Has Died
If your former husband or wife has died, the Slovak authority may ask for a death certificate.
They may also ask for your marriage certificate if the death certificate does not show your relationship to the deceased.
You should check whether these documents need:
- an apostille;
- certified Slovak translation;
- solicitor certification;
- notarisation;
- further local preparation.
If You Want to Marry Your Civil Partner
You cannot get a CNI while you are still in a civil partnership.
If you want to marry your civil partner, you must either:
- convert the civil partnership into a marriage; or
- end the civil partnership before getting married.
If you registered a same-sex civil partnership in the UK, you may be able to convert it into a marriage.
Check the law of that country if the civil partnership was registered elsewhere.
If You Have Changed Your Name
If your current name does not match your birth certificate, passport, CNI or divorce document, you may need evidence of your name change.
This may include:
- a marriage certificate;
- a civil partnership certificate;
- a deed poll;
- a statutory declaration;
- the equivalent document from the country where it was issued.
Name differences can delay overseas marriage paperwork.
Check the spelling and order of all names before submitting documents.
Why Slovakia Needs Careful Document Planning
Slovakia has different routes depending on where you live.
If you live in the UK, you usually need a CNI from a UK register office.
If you live overseas, the Slovak register office may ask for an affirmation of marital status signed before a local notary public in Slovakia.
The main practical questions are:
- whether you need a UK register office CNI;
- whether you need a Slovak notary affirmation;
- whether the CNI or affirmation must be apostilled;
- whether UK documents need Slovak translation;
- whether a prior UK divorce document is required;
- whether the authority accepts electronic UK court documents.
Early checking helps avoid last-minute problems.
