Ginkgo Advisory can review Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) certificates and supporting documents for use in mainland China. Our services include our solicitor certification, UK FCDO paper apostille and UK FCDO e-Apostille for eligible documents, assessed against the actual record and the recipient’s written instructions.
A request may concern employment checks, study, professional registration or an internal compliance file. Ask the receiving organisation to identify the evidence it needs. A qualification certificate, examination result, membership certificate and letter of good standing can answer different questions.
Our CCEA document certification and apostille services
- Our UK solicitor certification: review the record and available evidence, then prepare certification reflecting the checks completed.
- UK FCDO paper apostille: arrange suitable preparation, physical submission and the agreed return method.
- UK FCDO e-Apostille: assess eligibility, prepare the agreed electronic solicitor certification and manage submission for a suitable document.
Explore our solicitor-certified copy service, UK FCDO apostille service and UK e-Apostille service. We handle the agreed preparation and application; the FCDO issues the apostille.
CCEA certificates, results and verification
Document distinction: CCEA examination records relate to the qualifications and results it awarded; studying in Northern Ireland alone does not establish that CCEA holds every examination result.
Find the examining board before ordering a record
A person educated in Northern Ireland may hold qualifications from CCEA and other examination boards. Before requesting a document for China, identify the board printed on each certificate rather than assuming that CCEA holds all results from the school. The qualification title, examination year, series and candidate name help locate the correct record.
CCEA GCSE and A level documents are examination records, not degree certificates. A Chinese request for academic evidence may concern those results, a school transcript or a later higher education qualification. Ask the recipient to distinguish these documents before deciding which should enter a document preparation for China enquiry.
Certified statements and identity details
CCEA’s application for replacement records asks for identification and the personal and examination details needed to search its records. Include the name used when the examinations were taken and explain a subsequent name change through the requested evidence. A certificate issued in a former name is a different issue from a printing error.
The published form explains that a statement includes the results for the relevant examination series; an applicant cannot simply remove unwanted subjects. CCEA also distinguishes its formal records service from informal confirmation by telephone or email. A nominated delivery address or recipient should therefore be considered alongside the document preparation arrangements.
Plan the evidence needed in China
UK guidance explains that general examination certificates such as GCSEs and A levels are normally evidenced through a certified statement when the original is lost. That replacement function does not by itself confirm acceptance for a particular official or immigration submission.
Ask whether the Chinese recipient wants the original certificate, a formal statement of results or an additional school record. If several examination boards were involved, separate requests may be needed. Ginkgo Advisory can review the resulting documents and proposed certification route while keeping the examination award, the identity evidence and any later academic qualification clearly distinguished.

Identify the actual issuer and document type
Read the issuing name, qualification or membership title and reference on the document. A training centre may deliver the course while an awarding organisation issues the qualification. A professional body may accredit a university course without issuing the university’s degree certificate.
A qualification’s level or a progression arrangement should not be used to rename it as a university degree. If you also obtained a university top-up degree, keep that certificate and its transcript separately identified. Where a record was issued overseas, assess its issuing jurisdiction before assuming that a UK document route applies.
Our solicitor certification and authenticity checks
A certified copy concerns the comparison undertaken. An authenticity check concerns the issuer’s record behind the document. Our solicitor can assess the evidence available and prepare wording that accurately describes the work completed. Any additional issuer verification should be identified in the agreed scope.
Provide official sharing access, verification references or consent where the issuer’s procedure requires them. Retain the original electronic file and the accompanying verification information. A screenshot of a successful search is different from the certificate or status letter requested for submission.
The FCDO legalisation guidance includes qualification certificates certified by a UK solicitor or notary. Identify any recipient requirement for a particular certifier or wording. The appropriate preparation depends on the document and intended use.
Paper apostille or FCDO e-Apostille for China?
For the UK electronic route, the submitted PDF must be electronically signed by a UK solicitor or notary. A scanned signature, digital badge or issuer-generated PDF does not alone establish readiness for that process. Eligibility should be checked for the exact document type.
The HCCH Apostille guidance states that validly issued e-Apostilles have the same Convention standing as paper apostilles and must be recognised by Contracting Parties. Electronic form alone is not a basis for refusal. Clarify how the completed file will be received and validated, alongside the requirements for the underlying evidence.
| Service | Result | Point to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Solicitor certification | The agreed certification of the document or copy examined. | Evidence, wording and any separately requested authenticity check. |
| UK FCDO paper apostille | A physical document bearing the attached apostille. | Original or certified-copy presentation and delivery arrangements. |
| UK FCDO e-Apostille | The completed electronic file for digital sharing. | Document eligibility, certification and arrangements for receiving and validating the file. |
Keep an electronically legalised file intact for verification. A printout does not preserve its electronic signature or become a paper apostille. Where the issuer restricts downloads or printing, establish the official sharing options before selecting a preparation route.
Is Chinese Embassy attestation still needed?
The Chinese Embassy’s Apostille Convention notice explains that, from 7 November 2023, covered UK public documents can be used in mainland China with a UK apostille without further Chinese consular legalisation. The Embassy and Consulates in the UK ceased providing the corresponding legalisation service.
If an older checklist still requests Chinese Embassy legalisation or attestation, ask for clarification against that notice. The recipient’s requirements for the record’s content, language, date and submission format still need to be identified. The appropriate UK certification must be assessed for the actual document.
Do results, transcripts or status letters need separate apostilles?
Ask the recipient to name each document and the treatment required. It may need a qualification certificate with a results record, or proof of current professional status alongside an older award. A request for supporting evidence does not automatically establish that every item needs separate authentication.
Where several records require apostilles, clarify whether separate processing is required or an appropriately certified set is suitable. Combining files into one PDF does not answer that question. Include every page and existing attachment when requesting a review.
Translations, recognition and China work applications
The official work permit overview published by Beijing refers to degree, professional qualification and other supporting evidence. It should be read alongside the checklist applicable to the applicant, employer and application stage.
If the instructions mention a Chinese translation, academic equivalence, occupational recognition or professional registration, provide that wording. Establish which parts need translation and who must prepare or endorse it. An apostille authenticates the relevant official signature, capacity or seal; it does not convert a qualification or membership into a degree or decide permission to practise a profession.
Arrange a document review and quotation
- Send the complete records: include the certificate, requested results or standing evidence, recipient instructions and deadline.
- Identify the proposed preparation: we review the issuer, verification route, certification and paper or electronic eligibility.
- Agree the scope: the quotation should identify the professional work, FCDO charges and delivery or digital return.
- Certification and submission: once the evidence is ready, we prepare the agreed document and manage its application.
- Receive the completed document: use the agreed return method for onward submission with any other requested material.
The complete timetable depends on obtaining records, verification, preparation, FCDO processing and physical delivery where applicable. A processing estimate for the apostille stage should not be treated as the timetable for the whole service. Tell us the document location and final submission date.
CCEA certificates for China: frequently asked questions
Can your solicitor certify my CCEA document?
We can review the document and supporting evidence for suitable solicitor certification. Include the recipient’s instructions so the wording, format and any additional verification can be assessed.
Can I obtain an FCDO e-Apostille?
For eligible documents, a valid e-Apostille is recognised under the Convention. Identify the exact record and electronic submission arrangements. A PDF issued by the awarding or professional body is different from an FCDO e-Apostille.
Do I need Chinese Embassy legalisation after the apostille?
For covered UK public documents used in mainland China, the UK apostille replaces the former consular legalisation stage. Clarify an instruction that still describes the former Embassy process.
Does a certificate checker replace an apostille?
A checker concerns the issuer’s record. An apostille authenticates the relevant official signature or seal in the document chain. Identify which verification and document formalities the recipient requests.
Does my qualification or membership count as a university degree?
Use the award’s actual title and issuer. A professional designation, vocational level or university progression route does not itself make a separate certificate a university degree. Recognition should be assessed for the particular submission.
Can you start with a scan?
A readable scan is suitable for the initial enquiry. The evidence needed for certification depends on the document, verification and required final format. We will identify what you need to provide after review.
Must I provide a transcript?
Ask whether the recipient means examination results, a unit record, qualification confirmation or an academic transcript from a separate university. The issuer may not provide a university-style transcript for the document you hold.
