Dominica Apostille Service: Competent Authority & Documents

Ginkgo Advisory

Dominica Apostille services and document legalisation: If a public document was issued in Dominica and must be presented abroad, an Apostille may allow the overseas recipient to verify the signature, capacity and seal of the relevant official. The issuing jurisdiction is essential: a public record originating in Dominica follows an Apostille authority designated for that jurisdiction, not a UK Apostille office.

Who issues Apostilles for documents from Dominica?

According to the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), the authority or authorities designated to issue Apostilles for Dominica include the Attorney General, Solicitor General, Registrar and Deputy Registrar. A Competent Authority is the public institution or official authorised under Article 6 of the 1961 Apostille Convention to issue the Apostille certificate. It is not a private document agency, intermediary or UK solicitor.

Local authority arrangements: These designated legal and registry officeholders are authorised to issue Apostilles.

For the current designated-office information and contact routes, consult the HCCH Competent Authority details for Dominica. The HCCH official list of Apostille Competent Authorities lists every participating jurisdiction.

Documents that may qualify for a Dominica Apostille

Typical enquiries concern the following records issued in Dominica. Whether a particular document is apostillable depends on its legal status, signature, issuing body and the rules of the Competent Authority. Some private documents require notarisation or prior official certification.

  • Civil status and family: birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, civil-status extracts, certificates of no impediment, name-change evidence and adoption papers.
  • Education and professional records: university degree certificates, academic transcripts, diplomas, school certificates, professional qualifications, and official enrolment or award letters.
  • Court, police and legal documents: police or criminal-record certificates, court orders, divorce decrees, probate or inheritance records, affidavits, declarations and powers of attorney.
  • Companies and commercial records: certificates of incorporation, company registry extracts, certificates of good standing, directors’ resolutions, corporate powers of attorney and notarised business documents.
  • Other public or notarised records: government letters, administrative records, authorised copies, and other official or notarial instruments that the relevant authority accepts.

Document acceptance is not automatic. Official originals, certified copies, notarised declarations, university verification or translations may be required. Documents executed abroad do not become public documents from Dominica merely because the holder currently lives there. The Apostille authenticates the public signature or seal, not the factual content of the document or the underlying qualification.

How to obtain an Apostille for documents from Dominica

  1. Confirm the country of issue and the destination country.
  2. Identify the document category and the public official or notary whose signature needs authentication.
  3. Check for an original, official certified copy, translation or prior issuer verification.
  4. Determine the correct locally designated Apostille authority.
  5. Arrange an eligible submission route where local handling can be confirmed.
  6. Return the completed document or advise on the receiving body’s separate requirements.

An Apostille generally replaces additional embassy legalisation only where the Convention applies between the document’s place of origin and its country of use, and the receiving body accepts the document. Some destinations or document categories may still require other steps. Check the HCCH Apostille Convention status table, including dates of entry into force, extensions and any objections that could affect an individual case.

Ginkgo Advisory: overseas document Apostille support

Ginkgo Advisory is a UK-based solicitor-led document service, not a Competent Authority designated for Dominica. We can review your document, explain the official pathway, identify possible prerequisite certification or notarisation and check whether local submission and secure document return can be coordinated. Only a duly designated authority for Dominica can issue the actual Apostille.

Ginkgo Advisory offers document review, requirement checking and case-by-case coordination for Dominica-origin documents. Availability of any local agent, collection, submission, payment or delivery arrangement is confirmed for each enquiry; we do not guarantee processing throughout the jurisdiction or for every document type.

If your document was issued in the United Kingdom rather than Dominica, the issuing authority will normally be the UK FCDO: see our UK FCDO Apostille service. A foreign Apostille does not replace an FCDO Apostille for a UK-origin public document.
