Do you need to use a UK document in Chile?
Ginkgo Advisory provides solicitor verification, enhanced solicitor certification and FCDO apostille services for Chile.
We assist with UK educational, company, court and personal documents. For urgent cases, our express e-Apostille service may take a few hours to one working day.
However, completion depends on document checks, verification, submission times and FCDO processing.
UK Documents for Use in Chile
Chile and the United Kingdom are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention.
The Convention entered into force for Chile on 30 August 2016. Therefore, an eligible UK public document can normally use an FCDO apostille instead of the longer embassy and consular legalisation process.
Chile’s immigration authority also confirms that a document apostilled in its country of origin does not need further legalisation by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Before starting, ask the Chilean recipient whether it needs:
- an original or certified copy
- an FCDO e-Apostille or paper apostille
- a Spanish translation
- separate apostilles for each document
- direct verification from the issuing body
- a document issued within a specific period
These checks can prevent delays and unnecessary costs.

Our solicitor can review many UK documents.

- Degree Certificates
- Academic Transcripts
- Diploma Supplements
- Higher Education Achievement Reports
- university letters
- school certificates
- professional qualifications

The correct route depends on the document and its intended use in Chile.
What Is Solicitor Certification?
Solicitor certification is a formal statement signed by a UK solicitor.
For example, the solicitor may confirm that a copy matches the original document.
Basic wording often states:
“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document.”
This statement may meet a simple certified-copy requirement. However, it does not confirm that the issuing university, court, company or public body created a genuine document.
Therefore, a Chilean university, employer or authority may ask for stronger evidence.
What Is Enhanced Solicitor Certification?
Enhanced solicitor certification goes beyond basic true-copy wording.
First, our solicitor checks the document through a reliable source. The source may include a university, Companies House, a court record or an official digital system.
Next, we prepare stronger wording, such as:
“I further certify that I have verified the authenticity of this document with the issuing institution.”
As a result, the Chilean recipient receives:
- a certified copy of the document; and
- confirmation that the solicitor checked its source.
This approach can help where the recipient wants more than a visual comparison with the original.
Solicitor Verification and Certification
Verification and certification are separate stages.
Verification means checking the document with its issuing source.
Certification means issuing the formal solicitor statement after completing that check.
For educational documents, we may use:
- direct university confirmation
- HEDD
- Gradintelligence
- Digitary
- Parchment
- an official university portal
- a secure document-sharing service
Company checks may involve official Companies House records.
Court-document checks can include the court seal, case number, issue email or other official evidence.
Afterwards, our solicitor prepares and signs the certificate.
What Does the FCDO Apostille Confirm?
The FCDO checks whether the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal matches its records.
When the document meets the legalisation rules, the FCDO issues an apostille. Qualification certificates, contracts, powers of attorney and certified document copies can qualify after certification by a UK solicitor or notary.
However, an apostille does not confirm every statement inside the underlying document.
Chile’s official guidance applies the same principle to Chilean apostilles: legalisation and apostille certify the relevant signature but do not review the document’s contents.
For this reason, enhanced solicitor certification can create a stronger evidence chain:
Source verification → enhanced solicitor certification → solicitor signature → FCDO apostille
The apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal. The enhanced certificate records the verification completed before legalisation.
Does a UK Apostille Need Chilean Consular Legalisation?
Normally, no.
Where the Hague Apostille Convention applies, the issuing country provides the apostille.
Therefore:
- the UK FCDO apostilles UK documents;
- the competent Chilean authorities apostille Chilean documents.
A correctly apostilled UK document should not need further legalisation from a Chilean Consulate or the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
However, the receiving body can still request an original, translation or specific document format.
FCDO e-Apostille for Chile
The FCDO offers both paper apostilles and e-Apostilles.
For an e-Apostille, a UK solicitor or notary must electronically sign the PDF. The applicant can then upload the signed file to the FCDO legalisation service.
Our solicitor’s electronic signature is registered with the FCDO for e-Apostille purposes.
Consequently, we can prepare eligible PDFs for electronic legalisation.
Nevertheless, ask the Chilean recipient whether it accepts:
- a UK FCDO e-Apostille
- an electronically signed PDF
- a printed copy of the digital document
- a paper apostille attached to an original
- a file submitted through an online platform
A paper apostille may work better when the recipient requires a physical original.
Express e-Apostille Service for Chile
Straightforward cases may take a few hours to one working day when:
- the document is clear and complete
- source verification has finished
- the PDF qualifies for an e-Apostille
- payment has arrived
- the FCDO requires no further checks
The FCDO publishes an e-Apostille processing time of up to two working days. Signature checks or document queries may extend that period.
Therefore, urgent clients should send the document and the Chilean recipient’s requirements as early as possible.
Educational Documents for Chile
UK educational documents may support:
- Chilean university admission
- postgraduate study
- employment
- recognition by Mineduc
- professional registration
- teaching applications
- public-sector work
- immigration procedures
Common documents include the Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript.
A Degree Certificate confirms the academic award. In contrast, an Academic Transcript records subjects, grades, credits and study dates.
However, an apostille does not itself decide the Chilean status of a UK qualification.
The applicant may also need:
- recognition under the UK–Chile agreement
- direct university verification
- an Academic Transcript
- a Diploma Supplement
- course descriptions
- professional licensing
- separate apostilles
UK–Chile Agreement on Degree Recognition
Chile and the United Kingdom have a specific mutual recognition agreement for higher-education degrees and academic qualifications.
The agreement entered into force internationally on 22 April 2018. Chile’s Ministry of Education is responsible for processing applications involving eligible UK qualifications.
Chile recognises eligible qualifications awarded by institutions listed as UK Recognised Bodies under the relevant education legislation or replacement lists.
The agreement can also cover certain qualifications for which the former Council for National Academic Awards acted as the awarding body between 1964 and 1993.
This UK-specific route is important because UK qualifications do not normally follow the general University of Chile revalidation route used for many other countries.
Which Authority Handles UK Degree Recognition?
ChileAtiende states that recognition of qualifications awarded in the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland takes place through the Chilean Ministry of Education, known as Mineduc.
Mineduc’s digital procedures also list a specific application route for qualifications obtained in:
- the United Kingdom
- Northern Ireland
- Argentina
- Spain
Therefore, applicants with a UK degree should first check the Mineduc recognition procedure rather than assuming they must apply through another authority.
Recognition and Apostille Are Different
Degree recognition and apostille perform different functions.
The FCDO apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal.
Mineduc decides whether the UK qualification qualifies for recognition under the bilateral agreement.
Neither step automatically replaces the other.
A Chilean employer or professional body may ask for both:
- an apostilled qualification; and
- a Mineduc recognition decision.
UK Degree Verification for Chile
A basic certified copy may not satisfy every Chilean recipient.
For stronger evidence, our solicitor can verify a UK qualification where the university provides a reliable route.
The process may include:
- reviewing the Degree Certificate
- checking the Academic Transcript
- using an official verification platform
- contacting the issuing university
- confirming the qualification’s source
- preparing enhanced certification
- electronically signing the PDF
- arranging the FCDO apostille
This process records how we checked the qualification.
However, it does not replace a formal Mineduc recognition decision where the recipient requires one.
Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript
Applicants should not assume that the Degree Certificate alone will be enough.
The Degree Certificate confirms that the institution awarded the qualification.
The Academic Transcript usually records:
- subjects studied
- grades achieved
- academic credits
- dates of attendance
- internships or placements
- completion requirements
Chile’s general foreign-title recognition guidance lists both the professional title and the original grade or subject certificate among the documents that may be required.
Therefore, ask whether the Chilean authority wants both documents apostilled separately.
Professional Qualifications in Chile
Recognition of an academic degree does not always grant the right to practise a regulated profession.
Additional approval may apply to areas such as:
- medicine
- dentistry
- nursing
- pharmacy
- veterinary medicine
- law
- teaching
- architecture
- other regulated professions
For example, ChileAtiende confirms that recognition of a foreign law qualification does not itself authorise professional practice as a Chilean lawyer. The Supreme Court of Chile grants the professional lawyer title through a separate procedure.
Therefore, applicants should obtain a written checklist from the competent professional authority before legalising multiple documents.
The authority may request:
- a Degree Certificate
- an Academic Transcript
- course descriptions
- proof of professional registration
- certificates of good standing
- employment records
- apostilled documents
- further examinations or assessments
Does Chile Require a Spanish Translation?
The answer depends on the recipient and procedure.
Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides an official translation service between Spanish and several languages, including English. However, the service is not compulsory in every case. The organisation receiving the document decides whether a translation is required.
Before arranging a translation, ask:
- whether the recipient accepts English
- whether it requires Spanish
- whether the apostille also needs translation
- whether every page and annex needs translation
- whether MINREL must prepare the translation
- whether another certified translator is acceptable
MINREL asks applicants to present a properly apostilled or legalised document when requesting its translation service.
Therefore, the usual sequence may be:
UK document → FCDO apostille → Spanish translation
English Documents in Chilean Immigration Applications
Some Chilean immigration procedures accept documents written in either Spanish or English.
Current immigration guidance states that documents written in a language other than Spanish or English must include an official translation authorised by the competent body.
As a result, an English UK document may not need translation for some immigration applications.
However, this rule does not apply automatically to every:
- university
- municipality
- court
- civil registry
- bank
- professional body
Always follow the checklist for the specific procedure.
Company Documents for Chile
UK company documents may support:
- forming a Chilean subsidiary
- establishing a branch
- opening a corporate bank account
- foreign investment
- commercial contracts
- tax registration
- public tenders
- proving directors or shareholders
- appointing a Chilean representative
Official Companies House certificates may qualify for direct FCDO legalisation.
Company-created documents usually need an appropriate signature or solicitor certification before the FCDO can issue an apostille.
Examples include:
- board resolutions
- shareholder resolutions
- company powers of attorney
- registers of directors
- registers of members
- authorised signatory letters
- commercial agreements
Requirements can differ between Chilean banks, notaries, registries, lawyers and corporate service providers.
Therefore, ask the recipient whether it needs:
- an official Companies House certificate
- a recently issued Certificate of Good Standing
- solicitor certification
- notarisation
- an FCDO apostille
- a Spanish translation
- a separate apostille for each document
Powers of Attorney for Chile
A UK power of attorney may support:
- a property transaction
- company formation
- tax registration
- court proceedings
- estate administration
- representation before a Chilean authority
- commercial transactions
The Chilean lawyer or notary should provide the required wording before the document is signed.
Depending on the transaction, the power may require:
- execution before a solicitor or notary
- identity verification
- witness details
- an FCDO apostille
- a Spanish translation
- protocolisation before a Chilean notary
- an original paper version
Do not rely on a general template without checking the Chilean requirements.
Court Documents for Chile
UK court documents may need legalisation for:
- divorce recognition
- probate
- inheritance
- family proceedings
- civil claims
- debt enforcement
- commercial disputes
Examples include:
- Final Orders
- Decrees Absolute
- court judgments
- consent orders
- Grants of Probate
- Letters of Administration
A court document with a recognised wet-ink seal may qualify for direct FCDO legalisation.
By contrast, an electronic court document may first need solicitor verification and certification. GOV.UK confirms that court documents with wet-ink court seals can qualify directly, while other documents may need certification by a UK solicitor or notary.
The Chilean court, registry or lawyer may also require:
- a paper apostille
- an official Spanish translation
- an original document
- further recognition proceedings
- a document issued within a set period
Confirm these requirements before selecting the e-Apostille route.
Immigration and Residence Documents
UK documents may support Chilean applications involving:
- temporary residence
- permanent residence
- family reunification
- employment
- study
- business
- proof of family relationships
Chile’s immigration authority confirms that foreign documents from Hague Convention countries must receive the apostille in their country of origin. They do not need extra certification after arriving in Chile.
Permanent-residence procedures may require an apostilled or legalised criminal-record certificate that remains valid and includes a translation where applicable.
Some immigration categories also require police certificates issued no more than 60 days before the application.
Therefore, check the required issue date before ordering an ACRO Police Certificate.
Birth, Marriage and Civil-Status Documents
UK civil-status documents may support:
- birth registration
- marriage registration
- family reunification
- divorce procedures
- nationality matters
- inheritance
- proof of family relationships
Common documents include:
- birth certificates
- marriage certificates
- death certificates
- civil partnership certificates
- adoption certificates
- divorce orders
The Chilean recipient may require:
- the original paper certificate
- an FCDO paper apostille
- a Spanish translation
- a long-form certificate
- a recent issue date
Foreign birth-registration procedures may require a certified Spanish translation when the original certificate uses another language.
Police Certificates for Chile
An ACRO Police Certificate may support:
- temporary residence
- permanent residence
- employment
- professional registration
- nationality matters
The FCDO does not offer an e-Apostille for ACRO Police Certificates. Therefore, ACRO documents must use the paper apostille route.
The Chilean recipient may also request:
- the original certificate
- a recent issue date
- a Spanish translation
- direct delivery
- a separate apostille
Check the required validity period before ordering the certificate.
Documents That Need a Paper Apostille
The FCDO does not issue an e-Apostille for certain document types.
These include:
- UK birth certificates
- marriage certificates
- death certificates
- civil partnership certificates
- adoption certificates
- other General Register Office documents
- ACRO Police Certificates
- DBS certificates
- Scottish and Northern Irish disclosure certificates
- fingerprint certificates
- ACCA membership certificates
These documents normally require a paper apostille.
A Chilean recipient may also request a physical document even where the FCDO offers an electronic option.
Separate or Combined Apostilles?
Several related documents can sometimes form one solicitor-certified PDF.
However, this approach does not suit every Chilean application.
Separate apostilles may work better when:
- the Degree Certificate and Transcript have separate uses
- Mineduc expects separate academic documents
- each document will go to a different authority
- the recipient requests an apostille for each document
- the documents come from different issuing bodies
GOV.UK advises applicants to ask whether the recipient wants one apostille for a group of documents or separate apostilles for each one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chile accept an FCDO apostille?
Yes. Chile and the United Kingdom are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. Chile joined the Convention with effect from 30 August 2016.
Does an apostilled UK document need Chilean Embassy legalisation?
Normally, no. Chilean immigration guidance confirms that foreign documents apostilled in a Convention country do not need further legalisation in Chile.
Does Chile accept an FCDO e-Apostille?
A UK e-Apostille may suit digital applications. However, the receiving Chilean authority should confirm that it accepts an electronically signed PDF.
Is true-copy certification enough?
It depends on the purpose. Some Chilean recipients may also want confirmation that the solicitor verified the document with its issuing body.
Can you verify a UK Degree Certificate?
Yes, where the issuing university provides a reliable verification route.
Is there a UK–Chile degree recognition agreement?
Yes. The mutual recognition agreement entered into force on 22 April 2018. Mineduc handles applications involving eligible qualifications from recognised UK awarding institutions.
Does an apostille replace Mineduc recognition?
No. An apostille authenticates the relevant signature or seal. Mineduc decides whether the qualification receives recognition under the UK–Chile agreement.
Does Mineduc recognise every UK qualification?
Not automatically. The agreement covers eligible qualifications awarded by institutions that meet its requirements, including relevant UK Recognised Bodies.
Can you apostille an Academic Transcript?
Yes. We can review, verify and certify an eligible Academic Transcript before arranging the FCDO apostille.
Does Chile require a Spanish translation?
Not always. The receiving institution decides whether a translation is necessary. Some immigration procedures accept documents in English, while other authorities may require Spanish.
Should translation take place before or after the apostille?
The usual route is to obtain the apostille first and then translate the complete legalised document. MINREL asks applicants to present the apostilled or legalised source document when requesting its translation service.
Can an ACRO Police Certificate receive an e-Apostille?
No. An ACRO Police Certificate must use the FCDO paper apostille route.
Can several documents share one apostille?
Sometimes. However, the Chilean recipient may request a separate apostille for each document.
