What Is Solicitor Certification?

Solicitor certification is a formal statement signed by a UK solicitor.

For example, the solicitor may confirm that a copy matches the original document.

Basic wording often states:

“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document.”

This wording may meet a simple certified-copy request. However, it does not confirm that the issuing body created a genuine document.

As a result, a Dutch municipality, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service or another authority may carry out further checks.

What Is Enhanced Solicitor Certification?

Enhanced solicitor certification goes beyond basic true-copy wording.

First, our solicitor checks the document through a reliable source. That source may include a university, Companies House, a court record or an official online system.

Next, we prepare stronger wording, such as:

“I further certify that I have verified the authenticity of this document with the issuing institution.”

Therefore, the Dutch recipient receives both a certified copy and confirmation of the source check.

This extra step can help because Dutch guidance states that legalisation alone does not prove the truth of a document’s contents. A Dutch authority may still decide to check the document.

Solicitor Verification and Certification

Verification and certification are separate steps.

Verification means checking the document with its source.

Certification means issuing the formal solicitor statement after that check.

For educational documents, we may use:

What Does the FCDO Apostille Confirm?

The FCDO checks whether the relevant UK signature, seal or stamp matches its records. It then issues an apostille when the document meets its rules.

However, the apostille does not confirm every fact inside the document.

For this reason, enhanced solicitor certification can add an important extra step.

The legalisation chain may look like this:

Source verification → enhanced solicitor certification → solicitor signature → FCDO apostille

Together, these stages provide a clear document trail for use in the Netherlands.

Does the Netherlands Accept an e-Apostille?

Yes. Dutch government guidance confirms that a foreign document with an e-Apostille can be used in the Netherlands.

For a UK e-Apostille, a UK solicitor or notary must electronically sign the PDF. The FCDO then issues the legalised document in digital form.

Our solicitor’s electronic signature is registered with the FCDO for e-Apostille purposes.

Consequently, we can prepare eligible PDFs for electronic legalisation.

Once completed, the legalised PDF can be downloaded and shared by email or another digital method.

Express e-Apostille Service

Straightforward cases may take a few hours to one working day when:

• the document is clear and complete
• verification has finished
• the PDF qualifies for an e-Apostille
• payment has arrived
• the FCDO requires no extra checks

The FCDO lists its e-Apostille processing time as up to two working days. However, signature checks or further questions may extend that period.

Educational Documents for the Netherlands

UK educational documents may need legalisation for:

Meanwhile, diploma evaluation is a separate process. IDW compares a foreign qualification with the Dutch education system. An employer may request an evaluation, although it is not always required for work.

Therefore, ask whether the Dutch recipient needs:

Company Documents for the Netherlands

UK company documents may support:

Do UK Documents Need a Dutch Translation?

Usually not.

Dutch government guidance states that documents written in English do not need translation for use in the Netherlands.

Likewise, IDW normally requires a sworn translation only when the document is not in Dutch, English, German or French.

Nevertheless, the final rule rests with the Dutch recipient.

Before submission, ask whether it needs:

• the original English document
• a Dutch translation
• a sworn translation
• translation of the apostille
• translation of every annex

Documents That Need a Paper Apostille

The FCDO does not issue an e-Apostille for certain documents.

Examples include:

• UK birth certificates
• marriage certificates
• death certificates

• ACRO Police Certificates
• DBS certificates
• fingerprint certificates
• ACCA membership certificates

These documents normally require a paper apostille.

Dutch guidance also confirms that UK civil-status certificates and ACRO Police Certificates need a normal paper apostille.

Documents That May Not Need Legalisation

Some UK documents do not need an apostille for use in the Netherlands.

For example, documents issued by a British embassy or consulate can normally be used without legalisation.

A British Certificate of Naturalisation also does not need legalisation because it does not carry a signature.
