Do you need to use a UK document in South Korea?
Ginkgo Advisory provides solicitor verification, enhanced solicitor certification and FCDO apostille services for South Korea.
We assist with UK educational, company, court and personal documents. For urgent cases, our express e-Apostille option may take a few hours to one working day.
However, completion depends on document checks, submission times and FCDO processing.
UK Documents for Use in South Korea
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, uses the Hague Apostille system.
The Apostille Convention entered into force for South Korea on 14 July 2007. Therefore, a valid UK apostille normally replaces further legalisation by the Korean Embassy or Consulate.
Before starting, ask the Korean recipient whether it needs:
- an original or certified copy
- an e-Apostille or paper apostille
- a Korean translation
- separate apostilles for each document
- one combined legalised PDF
- documents issued within a set period
These checks can prevent delays and extra costs.
Which UK Documents Can We Prepare?
Our solicitor can review many UK documents.
Educational documents
- Degree Certificates
- Academic Transcripts
- Diploma Supplements
- Higher Education Achievement Reports
- university letters
- school certificates
- professional qualifications

Personal documents

The correct route depends on the document and its intended use in South Korea.
What Is Solicitor Certification?
Solicitor certification is a formal statement signed by a UK solicitor.
For example, the solicitor may confirm that a copy matches the original document.
Basic wording often states:
“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document.”
This wording may meet a simple certified-copy request. However, it does not confirm that the issuing body created a genuine document.
As a result, a Korean university, employer or public authority may ask for stronger proof.
What Is Enhanced Solicitor Certification?
Enhanced solicitor certification goes beyond basic true-copy wording.
First, our solicitor checks the document through a reliable source. That source may include a university, Companies House, a court record or an official online system.
Next, we prepare stronger wording, such as:
“I further certify that I have verified the authenticity of this document with the issuing institution.”
Therefore, the Korean recipient receives both a certified copy and confirmation of the source check.
Solicitor Verification and Certification
Verification and certification are separate steps.
Verification means checking the document with its source.
Certification means issuing the formal solicitor statement after that check.
For educational documents, we may use:
- direct university confirmation
- HEDD
- Gradintelligence
- Digitary
- Parchment
- an official university portal
- a secure document-sharing service
Meanwhile, company checks may involve Companies House records.
Court-document checks may include the seal, case number, court email or issue record.
Afterwards, our solicitor prepares and signs the certificate.
What Does the FCDO Apostille Confirm?
The FCDO checks whether a UK signature, stamp or seal matches its records. It then issues an apostille when the document meets its rules.
However, the apostille does not confirm every fact inside the document.
For this reason, enhanced solicitor certification can add an important extra step.
The legalisation chain may look like this:
Source verification → enhanced solicitor certification → solicitor signature → FCDO apostille
Together, these stages provide a clear document trail for use in South Korea.
Does South Korea Accept an FCDO e-Apostille?
South Korea operates an official electronic apostille service for eligible Korean documents. Its online system also provides information about apostille verification.
The UK FCDO also issues e-Apostilles.
For the UK electronic route, a solicitor or notary must electronically sign the PDF. Once the FCDO completes the application, the client can download and share the legalised file digitally.
Our solicitor’s electronic signature is registered with the FCDO for e-Apostille purposes.
Consequently, we can prepare eligible PDFs for electronic legalisation.
Nevertheless, you should ask the Korean recipient whether it accepts:
- a UK FCDO e-Apostille
- an electronically signed PDF
- a printed copy of the digital file
- a paper apostille attached to an original document
A paper apostille may be safer when the recipient asks for an original or hard-copy document.
Express e-Apostille Service for South Korea
Straightforward cases may take a few hours to one working day when:
- the document is clear and complete
- verification has finished
- the PDF qualifies for an e-Apostille
- payment has arrived
- the FCDO requires no extra checks
However, the FCDO may take longer if it needs to review the signature or document.
Therefore, urgent clients should send the documents and Korean requirements as early as possible.
Educational Documents for South Korea
UK educational documents may need legalisation for:
- Korean university admission
- student visa applications
- employment
- teaching positions
- professional registration
- postgraduate study
- qualification checks
- immigration applications
Common documents include a Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript.
A Degree Certificate confirms the award. In contrast, an Academic Transcript lists subjects, grades, credits and study dates.
Some Korean education and visa processes require applicants to apostille their final graduation certificate in the country where the school is located.
For example, Korea University’s D-4-1 application guidance requires an apostilled final school graduation certificate. It also says that applicants may need an apostilled notarised copy when the original diploma is issued only once.
Therefore, ask the Korean university whether it needs:
- the original Degree Certificate
- a certified copy
- the Academic Transcript
- separate apostilles
- a sealed university envelope
- direct university verification
UK Degree Verification for South Korea
A simple certified copy may not satisfy every Korean recipient.
For stronger proof, our solicitor can verify the qualification with the UK university where a reliable route exists.
The process may include:
- checking the Degree Certificate
- reviewing the Academic Transcript
- using an official verification platform
- obtaining confirmation from the university
- preparing enhanced authenticity wording
- electronically signing the certified PDF
- arranging the FCDO apostille
This process gives the Korean recipient a clearer record of how we checked the qualification.
Company Documents for South Korea
UK company documents may support:
- setting up a Korean branch
- company registration
- opening a corporate bank account
- commercial contracts
- tenders
- investment matters
- proof of directors or shareholders
- appointing a Korean representative
Official Companies House certificates may qualify for direct FCDO legalisation.
However, company-created documents usually need solicitor certification first.
Examples include:
- board resolutions
- shareholder resolutions
- company powers of attorney
- registers of directors
- registers of members
- authorised signatory letters
- commercial agreements
We review each document before choosing the paper or electronic route.
Court Documents for South Korea
Court documents may need legalisation for:
- civil proceedings
- divorce matters
- probate
- inheritance
- debt claims
- family cases
- commercial disputes
Examples include:
- Final Orders
- Decrees Absolute
- court judgments
- consent orders
- Grants of Probate
- Letters of Administration
The right process depends on the document format.
For example, a court document with a wet-ink court seal may qualify for direct paper legalisation. By contrast, an electronic court document may need solicitor verification and certification first.
ACRO and DBS Certificates for South Korea
An ACRO Police Certificate or DBS certificate may be required for some Korean employment, immigration or teaching procedures.
These documents cannot receive an FCDO e-Apostille.
Instead, the FCDO requires a paper apostille for:
- ACRO Police Certificates
- DBS certificates
- Scottish and Northern Irish disclosure certificates
- fingerprint certificates
The same restriction applies to UK birth, marriage, death, civil partnership and adoption certificates.
Therefore, clients should not select the electronic route for these documents.
Does South Korea Require a Korean Translation?
Translation rules depend on the recipient.
Some Korean universities accept documents written in Korean or English. For example, Korea University only asks for a certified translation when a document is not written in Korean, English or Chinese.
However, courts, employers, immigration offices and other bodies may apply different rules.
Before arranging a translation, ask:
- whether the recipient accepts English
- whether it needs a Korean translation
- whether the translation must be certified
- whether a Korean notary must approve it
- whether the apostille also needs translation
- whether every page must be translated
In many cases, applicants obtain the apostille first. Afterwards, the translator prepares the Korean version of the complete legalised document.
Separate or Combined Apostilles?
Several related documents can sometimes form one certified PDF.
However, this approach does not suit every application.
Separate apostilles may work better when:
- the Degree Certificate and Transcript have different uses
- the Korean recipient requests individual apostilles
- each document needs a separate translation
- one document may go to another authority later
- the documents come from different issuing bodies
Before submission, confirm whether the recipient accepts one combined file.
Our Process
Step 1: Send the Document
Send us a clear PDF of the UK document.
Step 2: Provide the Korean Requirements
Include any instructions from the Korean authority, university, employer, immigration office, court or company.
Step 3: Check the Correct Route
We review whether the document needs an e-Apostille, paper apostille or direct legalisation.
Step 4: Verify the Document
Where possible, our solicitor checks the document with its issuing source.
Step 5: Prepare Enhanced Certification
Next, we draft the correct wording and apply the solicitor’s electronic signature.
Step 6: Arrange the FCDO Apostille
We then submit the document through the suitable FCDO route.
Step 7: Send the Completed Document
Finally, we provide the completed legalised document.
A Korean recipient can verify a UK paper or electronic apostille online by using its issue date and apostille number.
