St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College qualifications may require different verification routes depending on whether the award is an MBBS medical degree or another academic qualification.
Ginkgo Advisory can assist with degree verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available for suitable documents after verification and certification are complete.
Quick answer
St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College was a recognised UK institution that gave awards between 1843 and 1995. Queen Mary University of London now verifies its qualifications.
The usual route for a non-MBBS qualification is:
HEDD verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required
Undergraduate Medicine MBBS qualifications are excluded from the standard HEDD service. These require Queen Mary’s separate MBBS transcript and verification process.
HEDD verification for non-MBBS awards
Queen Mary University of London is an exclusive HEDD partner. Employers, professional bodies, embassies and other third-party enquirers must submit routine verification requests through HEDD.
HEDD can check:
- current or former student status;
- course and qualification;
- year of award;
- grade or classification; and
- attendance dates.
The enquiry fee is currently £14. A request that does not match the electronic records may require a manual university check, which can take up to 10 working days.
Consent-form requirements
Queen Mary accepts the HEDD consent form only.
Valid signatures include:
- a handwritten signature;
- Adobe Sign;
- DocuSign; and
- a freehand digital signature.
A typed name is not accepted as a signature.
The signed form can be uploaded as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.
Separate MBBS verification route
The standard HEDD service does not cover undergraduate Medicine or MBBS qualifications.
MBBS graduates must use Queen Mary’s dedicated MBBS Transcript and Verification Requests service. Available documents include:
- MBBS transcripts;
- verification letters;
- Medical Student Performance Evaluations;
- prize confirmation letters; and
- confirmation of student-selected components.
Applicants should first contact smd-mbbs-transcripts@qmul.ac.uk when requesting a non-standard verification letter or confirmation of archived information.
Standard MBBS transcript requests are normally processed within 14 working days after payment. Requests may take longer during examination periods, archive searches or when non-standard documentation is required.
Results embargo periods
Queen Mary applies results embargo periods during the academic year.
During an embargo, the university may be unable to confirm results or produce transcripts until the relevant examination board has confirmed and officially released them. A request submitted during this period may be delayed or refunded.
Applicants with urgent deadlines should check the embargo timetable before ordering verification or graduate documents.
Transcripts, award letters and replacement certificates
Former students can order official transcripts, award letters and graduate packs from Queen Mary.
An award letter can confirm the course, study dates and final award. A transcript provides the modules, results and overall academic information held by the university. Paper versions are produced on Queen Mary headed paper with the university stamp and seal.
Historic replacement certificates require particular care. Queen Mary states that awards made before 2014 generally had the University of London as the awarding body. Replacement certificate requests for those awards should normally be directed to the University of London.
We check the awarding body printed on the original certificate before advising on a replacement-document route.
Solicitor verification and certification
A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.
It does not automatically prove that:
- the medical college issued the document;
- the graduate obtained the stated qualification;
- the grade is correct; or
- the award appears in official records.
Our enhanced service reviews the document against available official evidence.
Evidence may include:
- a HEDD verification;
- an MBBS verification letter;
- an official transcript;
- a Queen Mary award letter;
- a University of London document; or
- another reliable academic record.
Where the evidence supports it, the solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.
FCDO apostille
After verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not independently verify the medical or academic qualification.
The recommended sequence is:
academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille
Ginkgo Advisory offers a 2 working day express FCDO apostille option for suitable documents.
The timeframe starts after verification and solicitor certification are complete. It excludes HEDD processing, MBBS record searches, transcript production, courier delivery and embassy processing.
Embassy legalisation
Documents intended for a destination outside the Hague apostille system may require additional embassy or consular legalisation.
A typical route is:
verification → solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation
The receiving authority may also request:
- an official transcript;
- an MBBS verification letter;
- a certified translation;
- proof of professional registration;
- a passport copy; or
- additional medical education documents.
What to send us
Please provide:
- a clear scan of the certificate;
- the transcript, if available;
- the candidate’s name during study;
- course and qualification;
- attendance dates;
- graduation year;
- student number, if known;
- destination country;
- intended use; and
- the receiving authority’s instructions.
We will determine whether the case should follow the standard HEDD route, the separate Queen Mary MBBS route or the University of London documentation route.
