If you need to use a The Open University degree certificate overseas, it is important to follow the correct verification route from the start.
The Open University is a UK government-recognised degree-awarding institution. For completed qualifications, third-party verification must be obtained exclusively through HEDD. The university also requires the official Open University consent form, and other consent forms may be rejected. This is an important detail, because using the wrong form or the wrong route can delay the process.
At Ginkgo Advisory, we help clients handle the full process clearly, correctly, and efficiently.
About The Open University
The Open University is one of the best-known distance learning universities in the UK. It is a government-recognised degree-awarding body and its qualifications are widely used for employment, immigration, further study, and overseas official purposes.
Because its verification routes are structured and category-specific, it is important to identify the right path before moving on to solicitor certification, apostille, or embassy legalisation.
How Ginkgo Advisory can help
1. HEDD verification for completed Open University qualifications
For completed The Open University awards, verification is handled only through HEDD. Third-party enquirers such as employers, agencies, and embassies cannot verify completed awards directly by email with the university.
We can help you prepare the case properly, including:
- using the correct Open University consent form
- making sure the request follows the correct HEDD-only route
- checking whether additional details should be specified on the consent form
- helping structure the case for the next legalisation stage
This route is generally used to confirm:
- whether the candidate was a past student
- the award granted
- the grade or classification attained
- attendance dates
2. Solicitor authentication linked to authenticity verification
This is where our approach is different.
Many agents or solicitors only certify a copy or printout as a document shown to them. That is often weaker than what international authorities really want.
At Ginkgo Advisory, where appropriate, we can arrange solicitor certification linked to an independent verification trail, so the wording is based on actual authenticity verification, not merely on a document being presented to the solicitor. This creates a stronger package for overseas use, especially where the receiving authority expects more than a basic certified true copy.
3. FCDO apostille
After the document has been properly prepared, we can arrange UK apostille through the FCDO.
We can also offer a 2 working day UK apostille service in many cases, subject to document readiness and submission timing.
4. Embassy legalisation or attestation
If the destination country requires more than apostille alone, we can also help arrange embassy legalisation or consular attestation after the FCDO stage.
Important Open University routes to identify first
Before starting, it is important to identify which category your document falls into.
Completed qualifications
Completed awards are normally verified through HEDD only, using the Open University consent form.
Ongoing study or incomplete qualifications
If the enquiry relates to a current student or an incomplete qualification, this cannot be verified through HEDD. A different university route is required.
PhD and research study
If the enquiry relates to a PhD or research degree, a separate route applies.
CNAA and OU Validated Partnerships awards
If the qualification relates to CNAA records or an OU-Validated Partnership award, The Open University Qualifications Centre may not hold the relevant student record. In those cases, the correct route may be through Open University Validated Partnerships Awards and Aftercare instead.
Open College of the Arts qualifications
For OCA qualifications, the route may depend on the award date. Some OCA awards can only be confirmed on a limited-information basis, while earlier awards may need to be handled through OCA directly.
Why clients use Ginkgo Advisory
We do more than process documents.
We help clients build the right verification and authenticity trail for international use, including:
- correct verification route identification
