UHI Millennium Institute was a recognised UK higher education institution that gave awards between 1998 and 2011. It became the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2011.

Ginkgo Advisory can assist with direct degree verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available once verification and certification are complete.

Quick answer

UHI Millennium Institute qualifications cannot be verified through HEDD.

Verification must be requested directly from the University of the Highlands and Islands. The usual route is:

direct UHI verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required

Candidate consent is required. Formal third-party requests may need to be made on the requesting organisation’s headed paper.

Direct UHI degree verification

UHI’s Student Records Office maintains university student records and issues degree certificates and transcripts. Its current contact email is:

sro@uhi.ac.uk

A verification request should normally include:

  • the candidate’s name during study;
  • any previous name;
  • date of birth;
  • course and qualification;
  • attendance dates;
  • award year;
  • grade or classification;
  • student number, if known;
  • a certificate copy; and
  • signed candidate consent.

The University may confirm former student status, the award, grade and attendance dates where the relevant records are available.

Check the awarding body

UHI Millennium Institute received taught degree-awarding powers in August 2008. It obtained university status in 2011.

Earlier or transitional certificates may name another awarding university, including:

  • the University of Aberdeen;
  • the University of Strathclyde;
  • the Open University; or
  • another validating institution.

The institution where the candidate studied may therefore differ from the legal awarding body.

We review the exact wording on the certificate before arranging verification, replacement documents or solicitor certification.

Transcripts and replacement certificates

UHI’s Student Records Office can issue additional transcripts for taught undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

A transcript may show:

  • modules studied;
  • credit values;
  • results;
  • qualification details; and
  • the final award.

PDF transcripts are currently available free of charge from the Student Records Office. Additional hard-copy transcripts may carry a fee.

Eligible graduates can also request a replacement certificate. UHI currently charges £35, plus an overseas postal fee where applicable.

Where another university awarded the qualification, that institution may need to issue the replacement certificate.

Solicitor verification and certification

A basic certified true copy only confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.

It does not independently prove that the candidate obtained the qualification.

Our enhanced service reviews the certificate against reliable evidence, such as:

  • direct UHI verification;
  • an official transcript;
  • a replacement certificate;
  • confirmation from the named awarding university; or
  • another official academic record.

Where the evidence supports it, our solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.

FCDO apostille

After verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not independently verify the academic qualification.

The recommended route is:

academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille

Our 2 working day express FCDO apostille option covers the apostille stage only.

It excludes university verification, archive searches, transcript production, replacement certificates, delivery and embassy processing.

Embassy legalisation

Documents intended for a destination outside the Hague Apostille Convention may require further embassy or consular legalisation.

A typical route is:

solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation

The receiving authority may also require an official transcript, university letter, certified translation or identity document.

What to send us

Please provide:

  • a clear certificate scan;
  • the transcript, if available;
  • the candidate’s name during study;
  • course and qualification;
  • attendance dates;
  • award year;
  • student number, if known;
  • destination country; and
  • receiving authority’s requirements.

We will identify whether verification should come from UHI, the Open University, Aberdeen, Strathclyde or another awarding institution.
