If you need to use an Anglia Polytechnic degree overseas (for a visa, job, professional registration, credential evaluation, or immigration), the receiving authority usually asks for two things:

  1. Award verification (prove the award record is genuine)
  2. Legalisation / Apostille (make the document acceptable abroad)

So, this guide explains the clean workflow that usually avoids rejection.

What was Anglia Polytechnic?

Anglia Polytechnic was a UK government-recognised body that gave awards between 1991 and 1992. Anglia Ruskin University verifies its qualifications.

Step 1 — Verify an Anglia Polytechnic award (the correct route)

Use Hedd (Higher Education Degree Datacheck) for third-party verification

Anglia Ruskin University provides online degree data verification via Hedd. In other words, third parties get verification by registering on Hedd.

Hedd can usually confirm (depending on records):

  • whether someone is a current/past student
  • the award (e.g., BA/MA)
  • the grade
  • the attendance dates

Important: Hedd is not for graduate self-verification

However, Hedd is built for employers, recruiters, agencies, embassies, and similar third parties. So, candidates normally cannot use Hedd to verify their own award.

Instead, if you are the degree holder and you need an “official verification” document, you may need a university-issued option (for example, transcripts or replacement certificates), where available.

Step 1B — Common exception: “Awards prior to November 1992” (CNAA-era awards)

Sometimes, older institutions conferred awards through Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA).

If your paperwork references CNAA, then use The Open University Validation Partnerships (Awards & Aftercare) rather than Hedd.

They can:

  • provide verification of a CNAA award (often as a certificate-style confirmation)

But they cannot:

  • verify detailed transcript information

You can submit requests as the student. Alternatively, a third party can submit if they hold signed consent.

Step 1C — HNC/HND pre-1992 (Edexcel/BTEC)

If you deal with an older HNC/HND (especially pre-1992), you often need the replacement certificate route through Pearson (formerly Edexcel / BTEC).

Step 2 — Solicitor certification (why it matters)

Many overseas authorities reject plain photocopies. Therefore, they often require a properly certified copy by a UK practising solicitor.

In practice, the solicitor will:

  • certify the copy as a true copy of the original (with the right wording)
  • confirm they reviewed the original and they are satisfied it is genuine (with the right wording, when appropriate)
  • sign and date it, and add details so the certifier is traceable

Step 3 — FCDO Legalisation Office apostille (UK Apostille)

Once you prepare the document correctly (original, or certified copy), the FCDO issues the apostille for countries in the Hague Apostille Convention.

In addition, some destination countries still require embassy legalisation after the apostille. So, treat that as an extra step after the FCDO stage.

How Ginkgo Advisory can help (end-to-end)

If you want a “done properly, minimal back-and-forth” process, we can support you across the full chain:

1) Fast triage: choose the correct verification track

  • Anglia Polytechnic (1991–1992) → Anglia Ruskin University verification via Hedd (Higher Education Degree Datacheck)
  • CNAA-conferred award → The Open University Validation Partnerships (Awards & Aftercare) route
  • Pre-1992 HNC/HND → Pearson replacement route

2) Document preparation + solicitor certification

  • First, we check whether your destination wants original or certified copy
  • Then, we prepare the copy set so the FCDO accepts it for apostille

3) FCDO apostille submission + return delivery

  • We handle submission to FCDO Legalisation Office and manage courier return

4) Optional add-ons (country dependent)

  • Embassy legalisation support, where required
  • Translation coordination, where required

FAQ

Do I need Hedd for an Anglia Polytechnic degree?
Yes, if a third party (employer/embassy/agency) needs verification. Anglia Ruskin University routes third-party checks through Hedd (Higher Education Degree Datacheck).

Can I (the graduate) use Hedd to verify my own degree?
Usually no. Instead, use university-issued options (such as transcripts or replacement documents), where available.

What if my award is CNAA (pre-1992 / legacy route)?
Then use The Open University Validation Partnerships (Awards & Aftercare). They can confirm the award, but they cannot confirm transcript details.

Does the FCDO apostille work on a degree certificate?
Yes. Once you prepare the document correctly (often with solicitor certification where needed), FCDO Legalisation Office can apostille it for use in Hague Apostille Convention countries.
