Legal Consultant of Ginkgo Advisory
If you need to use a UK university degree in Austria, the Austrian authority may ask you to obtain a UK Apostille. This often applies to residence permit applications, work authorisation, employment, professional registration and other official procedures.
Ginkgo Advisory provides a complete UK degree apostille for Austria service. First, we verify the UK university qualification. We then arrange solicitor certification and submit the document to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for an Apostille.
Clients can choose between two main options. Our UK FCDO e-Apostille service normally takes the same day or next working day after we complete the verification and solicitor certification. Alternatively, our express UK FCDO paper Apostille service normally takes two working days after the document is ready for submission.
Most importantly, we can handle the process remotely. Therefore, you normally do not need to visit our office or travel to the UK.
Do I Need a UK Degree Apostille for Austria?
An Austrian authority may ask for an Apostille when you submit a UK degree certificate for an official purpose.
For example, you may need an Apostille for:
- an Austrian residence permit;
- Austrian work authorisation;
- an employment application;
- professional registration;
- recognition of academic qualifications;
- university admission;
- immigration applications; or
- a relocation application.
However, each Austrian authority can set its own document requirements. Therefore, you should check exactly what the receiving authority needs before starting the process.
In particular, ask whether it requires:
- a UK FCDO e-Apostille;
- a paper Apostille;
- the original degree certificate;
- a solicitor-certified copy;
- an academic transcript; or
- a German translation.
Once you know the requirement, we can help you choose the correct Apostille route.
Recent Case: UK Master’s Degrees Required for Austria
A recent case involved a master’s degree from the University of York. The degree holder needed the certificate for an Austrian residence permit and work authorisation application.
Later, the client also asked us to process her husband’s master’s degree from the University of Leicester. After checking with the relocation agency, the client confirmed that an e-Apostille would be sufficient for both education certificates.
Neither graduate could provide the required digital certificate through GradIntelligence. Therefore, we arranged independent degree verification through HEDD.
The process included:
- reviewing clear scans of both degree certificates;
- obtaining signed consent forms;
- submitting both qualifications for HEDD verification;
- checking the verification results;
- arranging solicitor certification;
- submitting the certified documents for UK FCDO e-Apostilles; and
- returning the completed electronic documents.
HEDD verification normally takes one to three working days. Once HEDD completes the verification, the e-Apostille normally takes a further working day.
This case shows how clients can complete the entire UK degree verification, certification and e-Apostille process remotely.
Can I Get a UK Degree Apostille Remotely?
Yes. In many cases, we can handle the complete process remotely.
To begin, you can normally email us a clear colour scan of your degree certificate. We will review the certificate and identify the best way to verify the qualification.
Next, we verify the degree through an appropriate source. Depending on the university, this may involve GradIntelligence, HEDD or another university verification system.
Once we confirm the qualification, our solicitor can prepare the certification.
Therefore, you may not need to send your original degree certificate to us at all.
For example, where the receiving Austrian authority accepts a solicitor-certified copy, we can arrange the Apostille using that certified copy. The original degree can remain safely with you.
However, you may need to send the original if:
- the Austrian authority specifically requires it;
- the authority wants an Apostille connected to the original document;
- we cannot complete the required checks from a scanned copy; or
- the receiving authority refuses to accept a certified copy.
Therefore, we recommend checking the exact Austrian requirement before sending an important original document.
How Do We Verify a UK University Degree?
Verification forms an important part of the process.
Before our solicitor certifies the degree as genuine or authentic, we need reliable evidence that confirms the qualification.
Fortunately, several verification methods may be available.
GradIntelligence Degree Verification
Some UK universities use GradIntelligence to provide graduates with secure digital academic records.
For example, a graduate may have access to:
- a digital degree certificate;
- an academic transcript;
- a Higher Education Achievement Report; or
- another secure university record.
If your university uses GradIntelligence and you still have access to your account, you can share the digital record directly with us.
We can then compare the digital record with your degree certificate.
As a result, this route can make the verification process quick and straightforward.
HEDD Degree Verification
If you cannot access GradIntelligence, we may use HEDD degree verification instead.
HEDD provides an established way to verify UK higher education qualifications.
Normally, we will need:
- a clear copy of your degree certificate;
- your full name;
- your date of birth;
- the university name;
- your qualification;
- your graduation year; and
- a signed consent form.
In the recent Austria case, the clients signed HEDD consent forms and provided their dates of birth. We then submitted the verification requests on their behalf.
Therefore, losing access to an old university portal does not necessarily prevent you from obtaining an Apostille.
Direct University Verification
In some cases, we may also verify a qualification directly with the issuing university or through another recognised university system.
The best route depends on the university and the records available.
Therefore, we first review your certificate before confirming the verification method.
Solicitor Verification and Certification of a UK Degree
After we verify the degree, our solicitor can prepare the required certification.
Depending on your case, we may certify:
- a scanned copy of the degree certificate;
- a paper copy;
- an electronic copy; or
- the original certificate where required.
We then prepare the document in the correct form for submission to the FCDO.
This step matters because the FCDO Apostille normally authenticates the relevant UK public official or solicitor signature connected to the document.
Therefore, correct solicitor certification helps avoid unnecessary delays or rejected applications.
UK FCDO e-Apostille for a Degree Certificate
The UK FCDO e-Apostille provides a fast option when the receiving authority accepts electronic documents.
The FCDO issues the Apostille electronically rather than attaching a paper certificate to a physical document.
Our e-Apostille service normally takes the same day or next working day after we complete the degree verification and solicitor certification.
Therefore, an e-Apostille can work particularly well when you need to submit your documents quickly.
It may suit:
- online residence permit applications;
- electronic immigration applications;
- digital document submissions;
- relocation applications; and
- authorities that accept electronically signed and apostilled documents.
However, you should always confirm that the Austrian authority accepts an e-Apostille.
In the recent case, the client’s relocation agency specifically confirmed that an e-Apostille would work for the two education certificates.
Once we complete the process, we can send the electronic Apostille documents directly to you.
As a result, you can avoid international courier delays.
Express UK FCDO Paper Apostille
Some Austrian authorities still require a physical document.
In that situation, we can arrange our express UK FCDO paper Apostille service.
The express FCDO service normally takes two working days after we finish the document verification and solicitor certification.
A paper Apostille may suit you if:
- the Austrian authority requests a physical Apostille;
- you need to attend an appointment with paper documents;
- the authority asks to see an original certificate;
- the authority does not accept an e-Apostille; or
- you need to use the physical document for further formalities.
After the FCDO completes the Apostille, we can scan the finished document for you. We can then arrange international courier delivery where required.
e-Apostille or Paper Apostille: Which One Should I Choose?
The right choice depends on the Austrian authority.
Therefore, do not assume that one format works for every application.
| Service | Format | FCDO Processing Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK FCDO e-Apostille | Electronic | Same day or next working day | Authorities that accept electronic documents and e-Apostilles |
| Express UK FCDO paper Apostille | Physical | 2 working days | Authorities that require a physical or original document |
Please note that these times apply after verification and solicitor certification.
For example, if we need HEDD verification first, you should also allow the normal HEDD processing time.
What Documents Do I Need?
To start your UK degree apostille for Austria, please send us a clear colour scan of your degree certificate.
We will normally also need:
- your full name;
- your date of birth;
- the university name;
- your qualification;
- your graduation year;
- confirmation that you will use the document in Austria;
- the purpose of the application;
- the name of the Austrian authority, if known;
- confirmation of whether you need an e-Apostille or paper Apostille; and
- your deadline, if you have one.
If we need to use HEDD, we will also prepare a consent form for you to sign.
Once we receive the information, we can confirm the process and estimated timing.
Can You Apostille Several UK Degrees at the Same Time?
Yes.
We regularly handle more than one academic document at the same time.
For example, we can assist with:
- a husband’s and wife’s degree certificates;
- bachelor’s and master’s degrees;
- postgraduate certificates;
- degree certificates and transcripts;
- qualifications from different UK universities; and
- several documents for one Austrian immigration application.
However, we must review and verify each qualification separately.
In addition, each document that requires an Apostille will normally need its own solicitor certification and FCDO Apostille.
Even so, processing several documents together can make the overall application easier to manage.
How Long Does a UK Degree Apostille for Austria Take?
The total time depends mainly on how quickly we can verify your degree.
A typical process may involve:
- GradIntelligence verification: often quick where digital access is available;
- HEDD verification: normally 1–3 working days;
- solicitor certification: after successful verification;
- FCDO e-Apostille: same day or next working day; or
- express FCDO paper Apostille: 2 working days.
Therefore, clients who need documents urgently should send us their scans and information as early as possible.
Moreover, correct information helps us avoid unnecessary delays.
Do I Need to Apostille My Academic Transcript?
Possibly.
Some Austrian authorities ask for the degree certificate only. However, others may also request an academic transcript.
Therefore, you should ask the receiving authority whether it needs:
- the degree certificate only;
- the transcript only;
- both documents; or
- a separate Apostille for each document.
If the authority also requires your transcript, we can review its verification and certification requirements separately.
Do I Need a German Translation?
You may also need a German translation.
However, translation requirements vary between Austrian authorities.
Therefore, you should confirm whether the receiving authority:
- accepts the original English document;
- requires a German translation;
- requires a certified translation;
- wants the translation completed before or after the Apostille; or
- requires a translator with a particular qualification.
The Apostille and translation are separate requirements. Consequently, you should check both before submitting your application.
Why Use a Solicitor Verification and Apostille Service?
Academic document legalisation can become confusing because several steps may apply.
For example, you may need to identify:
- how to verify the university degree;
- what type of solicitor certification the FCDO will accept;
- whether to use an e-Apostille or paper Apostille;
- whether the Austrian authority accepts a certified copy; and
- whether you need the original document.
We manage these steps as one process.
Therefore, you do not need to arrange the university verification, solicitor certification and FCDO Apostille separately.
