UK Divorce Apostille for Lithuania
If you divorced in England or Wales and need to use your divorce document in Lithuania, you may need a UK apostille.
The usual route is:
UK Final Order or Decree Absolute
→ solicitor certification, if required
→ UK FCDO apostille
→ use in Lithuania
Lithuania is a Hague Apostille Convention country. This means UK divorce documents for Lithuania usually need a UK apostille, not Lithuanian Embassy legalisation.
Ginkgo Advisory assists clients in the UK, Lithuania and overseas with UK divorce apostille services for use in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys and other Lithuanian cities.
We offer express UK apostille service within 2 working days.
When You May Need This Service
You may need an apostilled UK divorce document for Lithuania if a Lithuanian authority, lawyer, notary, registry office, court, bank or private institution asks you to prove that your previous marriage has legally ended.
Common uses include:
- remarriage in Lithuania;
- civil status registration;
- immigration or residence applications;
- nationality or citizenship matters;
- Lithuanian court or lawyer requests;
- notarial procedures;
- inheritance or estate matters;
- property sale or purchase;
- banking, pension or insurance records;
- child, custody or family law matters.
Your UK divorce may already be legally final in England and Wales. However, the Lithuanian receiving party may still require the document to be apostilled before accepting it.
Which UK Divorce Document Do You Need?
For Lithuania, you normally need the final divorce document.
In England and Wales, this is usually:
Final Order
A Final Order is the current final divorce document under the no-fault divorce system.
Decree Absolute
A Decree Absolute is the older form of final divorce document used before the terminology changed.
Both documents prove that the marriage has legally ended.
You should not usually rely on:
- a Conditional Order;
- a Decree Nisi;
- a divorce application;
- a screenshot from the HMCTS portal;
- an email confirmation only;
- an incomplete PDF;
- a solicitor’s letter without the final court order.
Lithuanian authorities may ask for a “divorce certificate”, but the correct UK document is usually the Final Order or Decree Absolute.
Does Lithuania Require Embassy Legalisation?
Usually, no.
For UK documents used in Lithuania, the normal route is a UK apostille issued by the UK Legalisation Office.
The apostille must be issued in the country where the document originates. A UK Family Court divorce document must therefore be apostilled in the United Kingdom.
The practical route is:
Final Order or Decree Absolute
→ solicitor certification if required
→ FCDO apostille
→ Lithuania
Do You Need Solicitor Certification First?
Sometimes, yes.
Many modern UK divorce documents are electronic PDFs issued through HMCTS. They may have an electronic court seal rather than a wet-ink court stamp.
In these cases, the FCDO may require solicitor certification before issuing the apostille.
A strong solicitor certificate should make clear:
- what the document is;
- whether it is a Final Order or Decree Absolute;
- whether it is an electronic or paper document;
- that the solicitor has reviewed the document;
- that the certification is prepared for apostille and overseas use.
This gives the Lithuanian receiving party a clearer document chain.
Can the Process Be Handled Remotely?
Yes, in many cases.
You can email us a clear scan or PDF of your UK Final Order or Decree Absolute for initial review.
We can then confirm whether:
- the document is suitable;
- solicitor certification is needed;
- a fresh court copy may be required;
- the document can proceed to the FCDO apostille stage.
If the original paper document is required, we will let you know before submission.
You do not need to be in the UK to start the process.
Do You Need a Lithuanian Translation?
Possibly.
The UK apostille confirms the UK signature, stamp, seal or solicitor certification. It does not translate the document.
A Lithuanian authority may also ask for a Lithuanian translation, especially for remarriage, civil status registration, immigration, court, notarial, inheritance or property matters.
You should check translation requirements directly with the Lithuanian receiving authority before filing the document.
What to Send Us First
For initial review, please send us:
- your UK Final Order or Decree Absolute;
- the country of use: Lithuania;
- the receiving authority or institution;
- the purpose of use;
- whether the document is electronic or paper;
- whether the receiving party has asked for an apostille;
- whether a Lithuanian translation is required.
If you only have a screenshot, old scan, court email or incomplete download, we can advise whether you need a fresh court copy.
