UMIST Degree Verification and Apostille

The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, widely known as UMIST, awarded qualifications between 1966 and 2004.

UMIST merged with the Victoria University of Manchester on 22 October 2004 to form the present University of Manchester, which now maintains and verifies former UMIST records.

HEDD degree verification

HEDD can check:

• current or former student status;
• the qualification awarded;
• the grade or classification; and
• attendance dates.

The candidate must provide a signed consent form as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.

The enquiry should include:

• the candidate’s name during study;
• date of birth;
• course and qualification;
• attendance dates;
• year of graduation;
• classification; and
• student number, where available.

The HEDD service is for third-party enquirers, including employers, professional bodies, screening agencies and legal representatives.

UMIST certificates and transcripts

Former UMIST graduates can order a physical replacement certificate through the University of Manchester.

Digital certificates are not currently available for UMIST or other pre-October 2004 awards. Replacement certificates are printed on official security paper and show the qualification, programme, classification and award date.

Transcript records for UMIST graduates may be incomplete. The University advises pre-October 2004 graduates to contact their former School first. Where the School locates the academic record, the University may then produce an official transcript.

A graduate can also request a digital Confirmation of Award Letter. This may confirm the course, classification, registration dates and award date.

Check the institution name

Historic documents may show:

• the University of Manchester; or
• another affiliated or validating institution.

The historic UMIST name does not invalidate the qualification. The exact institution and awarding body printed on the certificate should be used when requesting verification.

Solicitor verification and certification

A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.

It does not independently prove that UMIST awarded the qualification.
