Check the awarding body
University College of Ripon and York St John did not generally award its own degrees during this period.
York St John’s official history states that its courses were awarded through the University of Leeds. The institution only obtained its own taught degree-awarding powers in 2005.
An academic document from 1990 to 1996 may therefore show:
- University College of Ripon and York St John as the teaching institution; and
- the University of Leeds as the awarding university.
This distinction matters when ordering replacement certificates or certified university copies.
Transcripts and replacement certificates
York St John University can provide transcripts and other records where it holds the required academic information.

Where the original certificate was issued by the University of Leeds, the replacement certificate must be requested directly from Leeds. York St John cannot replace or certify a University of Leeds certificate as though it were its own award.
