Legal Consultant of Ginkgo Advisory
University College, Swansea was a UK government-recognised institution that gave awards between 1920 and 1996. Swansea University now verifies its qualifications through HEDD.
Ginkgo Advisory can assist with HEDD verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available once verification and certification are complete.
Quick answer
University College Swansea qualifications can be verified through HEDD.
The normal route is:
HEDD verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required
Swansea University is an exclusive HEDD partner. Standard third-party degree verification requests must therefore be submitted through HEDD.
The current degree enquiry fee is £14.
HEDD degree verification
HEDD can check:
- current or former student status;
- the award obtained;
- the grade or classification; and
- attendance dates.
The candidate must provide a signed consent form as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.
This service is intended for third-party enquirers, such as employers, professional bodies, screening agencies and legal representatives. Graduates seeking self-verification should contact HEDD about the correct route.
Check the institution and awarding body
Swansea University was founded in 1920 as University College of Swansea and formed part of the University of Wales. Its historic names also include University College Swansea and University of Wales, Swansea.
An older certificate may therefore show:
- University College, Swansea;
- University College of Swansea;
- University of Wales;
- University of Wales, Swansea; or
- another awarding organisation.
The name of the teaching institution may differ from the legal awarding body. We review the wording on the certificate before arranging replacement documents or solicitor certification.
Transcripts and replacement certificates
Former students can request academic transcripts and replacement documents through Swansea University’s Hwb service.
A transcript currently costs £12 for the first copy and £5 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. Older records may require manual preparation, which normally takes at least two weeks. Some historic transcript information may no longer be available.
Replacement-certificate requests depend on the awarding body.
Swansea University began issuing its own certificates in 2010. Most graduates before that date received University of Wales certificates and should normally request replacements from the University of Wales.
Swansea University currently charges £35 for an eligible replacement certificate issued through its own route. The replacement will state that it is a duplicate.
Solicitor verification and certification
A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.
It does not independently prove that the candidate received the qualification.
Our enhanced service reviews the document against reliable evidence, such as:
- a HEDD verification result;
- an official transcript;
- a replacement certificate;
- a university confirmation letter; or
- evidence from the University of Wales.
Where the evidence supports it, our solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.
FCDO apostille
After verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not independently verify the academic qualification.
The recommended sequence is:
academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille
Our 2 working day express FCDO apostille option covers the apostille stage only. It excludes HEDD processing, transcript production, replacement certificates, courier delivery and embassy legalisation.
Embassy legalisation
Documents intended for a destination outside the Hague Apostille Convention may require further embassy or consular legalisation.
A typical route is:
solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation
The receiving authority may also request a transcript, university letter, certified translation or supporting identity document.
What to send us
Please provide:
- a clear scan of the certificate;
- the transcript, if available;
- the candidate’s name during study;
- course and qualification;
- attendance dates;
- award year;
- student number, if known;
- destination country; and
- receiving authority’s requirements.
We will identify whether the document should follow HEDD, Swansea University, the University of Wales or another awarding-body route.
