If you need to use a University of Aberdeen degree certificate, transcript, award letter, or other academic document overseas, the process is usually not just “get it stamped.” In most real cases, you need to separate verification, solicitor authentication, solicitor certification, FCDO apostille, and sometimes embassy legalisation / attestation.
About the University of Aberdeen
The University of Aberdeen is a UK degree-awarding institution. For third-party academic checks, there are two practical verification routes: HEDD and direct verification through the university’s Student Records team. HEDD shows that online degree data verification is available for Aberdeen, and the university also states that Student Records can confirm qualifications when the required signed approval is provided.
The 5 stages, clearly explained
1) Verification
Verification checks whether the academic details are genuine before any legalisation work continues.
For University of Aberdeen documents, there are two common routes:
Route A: HEDD
HEDD states that online degree data verification is available for the University of Aberdeen. It can be used to check whether someone is a current or past student, the award granted, the grade attained, and attendance dates. HEDD also states that a signed consent form from the candidate must be uploaded.
Route B: Direct verification with the university’s Student Records team
The University of Aberdeen states that Student Records can confirm dates of attendance and degree classification, where applicable, for employers and third parties, provided the enquiry is accompanied by an appropriate declaration signed by the student or graduate. The university also says it will not confirm details over the telephone and that most enquiries are answered within 5–7 working days.
2) Solicitor authentication
This is where many providers are too basic.
Some firms only write wording such as:
“I certify this is a printout presented to me.”
That is often a document copy statement only. It may help in limited situations, but it is not the same as a more careful process that includes an authenticity verification step.
At Ginkgo Advisory, where appropriate, we can help arrange a stronger solicitor-led process that does more than certify a printout. We can help structure the file so the certification is supported by prior verification, such as:
- HEDD verification, or
- direct confirmation from the University of Aberdeen Student Records team.
This helps create a more credible document trail for overseas authorities, employers, immigration cases, regulators, embassies, and other receiving parties.
3) Solicitor certification
Solicitor certification is not always the same thing as verification.
A proper certification workflow may involve:
- reviewing the underlying academic document,
- checking the verification evidence,
- confirming the basis on which the document is being certified,
- and preparing certification wording that is more meaningful than a bare “printout shown to me” statement.
This is especially important where the receiving authority wants more than a standard certified true copy.
4) FCDO apostille
If the destination country asks for a UK apostille, the document usually goes to the FCDO Legalisation Office. GOV.UK explains that the Legalisation Office checks whether the signature, stamp, or seal on the document matches its records and, if it does, legalises the document by attaching an apostille.
At Ginkgo Advisory, we can offer a 2 working day UK apostille service for suitable cases.
5) Embassy legalisation / attestation
For some destinations, the apostille is the final step. For others, it is not enough on its own, and the document must go on to the relevant embassy or consulate for legalisation / attestation after the FCDO stage. GOV.UK explains that overseas authorities sometimes require UK documents to be legalised for use abroad.
Whether embassy legalisation is needed depends on the destination country and the receiving authority’s rules.

How Ginkgo Advisory can help
At Ginkgo Advisory, we help clients with the full process for University of Aberdeen documents, including:
- checking which verification route is best,
- arranging HEDD verification where suitable,
- coordinating direct verification with Student Records where appropriate,
- preparing solicitor authentication based on real verification rather than a weak printout-only approach,
- handling solicitor certification,
- arranging FCDO apostille within 2 working days,
- and assisting with embassy legalisation / attestation where required.
The key difference is simple: we do not aim to be just another provider who merely says,
“this is a printout presented to me.”
Where the case calls for it, we help build a more reliable chain:
verification first, certification second, legalisation third.
Common question
Can a University of Aberdeen degree certificate be apostilled?
Often, yes — but the right first step is usually to confirm what kind of document you have, what the receiving party wants, and whether verification should be done first. HEDD and the University of Aberdeen Student Records team both provide recognised routes for checking academic details before moving on to solicitor work and apostille.
