University of Abertay Dundee was a recognised UK university name used between 1994 and 2013. Abertay University now verifies qualifications issued under that name.

Ginkgo Advisory can arrange HEDD verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available once verification and certification are complete.

Quick answer

University of Abertay Dundee qualifications can be verified through HEDD.

The usual route is:

HEDD verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required

Abertay University is an exclusive HEDD partner. Third-party degree verification requests must therefore be submitted through HEDD.

The current degree enquiry fee is £14.

HEDD verification requirements

HEDD can check:

  • current or former student status;
  • qualification type and course;
  • year of award;
  • grade or classification; and
  • attendance dates.

The candidate must provide a consent form that is signed and dated within the previous three months.

Abertay accepts both handwritten and digital signatures. The signed form can be uploaded as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.

The request should include the candidate’s:

  • name during study;
  • date of birth;
  • programme and qualification;
  • year of graduation;
  • classification; and
  • attendance dates, where required.

Abertay recommends using the degree certificate as the basis of the enquiry. Attendance dates should be requested when the HEDD application is submitted.

Transcripts and official documents

Former students can order:

  • replacement degree certificates;
  • academic transcripts;
  • official letters; and
  • module information, where available.

Graduates before July 2015 were normally issued a full academic transcript with their certificate. Students graduating from July 2015 onwards receive an electronic Higher Education Achievement Report through Gradintel.

For awards before September 2000, Abertay may need to search archived paper records. The level of information available can therefore vary.

Replacement certificates

Abertay can issue a replacement certificate when the original has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

The replacement:

  • uses the name held at graduation;
  • requires proof of identity;
  • is sent directly to the graduate; and
  • cannot be ordered merely because the original is temporarily unavailable.

Only one replacement certificate can be issued.

University of Abertay Dundee awards date from 1994 onwards, so they should normally fall within Abertay’s own replacement-certificate route.

Solicitor verification and certification

A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.

It does not independently prove that the qualification appears in Abertay’s official records.

Our enhanced service reviews the document against reliable evidence, such as:

  • a HEDD verification;
  • an official academic transcript;
  • a Higher Education Achievement Report;
  • an Abertay official letter; or
  • a replacement certificate.

Where the evidence supports it, our solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.

This creates a stronger evidence chain than a basic certified true copy.

FCDO apostille

After academic verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature or seal. It does not independently verify the underlying academic qualification.

The recommended process is:

academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille

Our 2 working day express FCDO apostille option covers the apostille stage only.

It excludes:

  • HEDD processing;
  • archived-record searches;
  • transcript production;
  • replacement certificates;
  • courier delivery; and
  • embassy legalisation.

Embassy legalisation

Documents intended for a destination that does not use the Hague apostille route may require further embassy or consular legalisation.

A typical process is:

solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation

The receiving authority may also request an official transcript, university letter, certified translation or supporting identity document.

What to send us

Please provide:

  • a clear scan of the certificate;
  • the transcript or HEAR, if available;
  • the candidate’s name during study;
  • programme and qualification;
  • attendance dates;
  • award year;
  • classification;
  • student number, if known;
  • destination country; and
  • receiving authority’s requirements.

We will confirm the correct verification, certification and legalisation route.
