Legal Consultant of Ginkgo Advisory
The University of Central England in Birmingham was a recognised UK university name used between 1992 and 2007. It changed its name to Birmingham City University in 2007, which now verifies qualifications issued under the former name.
Ginkgo Advisory can arrange HEDD verification, enhanced solicitor certification, FCDO apostille and embassy legalisation. A 2 working day express FCDO apostille option is available after verification and solicitor certification are complete.
Quick answer
University of Central England in Birmingham qualifications can be verified through HEDD.
The usual process is:
HEDD verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → embassy legalisation where required
Birmingham City University is an exclusive HEDD partner. Third-party degree verification requests must therefore be submitted through HEDD.
The current degree enquiry fee is £14.
HEDD verification requirements
HEDD can check:
- whether the candidate is a graduate;
- the qualification awarded;
- the grade or classification; and
- attendance dates.
Birmingham City University does not accept current-student verification through this graduate HEDD route. Current students can request a formal status letter through the University’s student portal.
The candidate must use a HEDD consent form that:
- names Birmingham City University;
- carries a handwritten signature;
- is dated within the previous three months; and
- is uploaded as a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIF.
The request should include the candidate’s:
- name during study;
- course and qualification;
- attendance dates;
- award year;
- classification; and
- student number, where available.
Awards from 1992 and early 1993
Birmingham City University holds limited information for some students who studied before 1993.
A verification request for an early University of Central England award may therefore confirm only part of the academic record. Exact module information or other details may not always be available.
A clear certificate, transcript and student number can help the University identify the correct record.
Certificates, transcripts and verification letters
Birmingham City University provides former students with:
- verification-of-studies letters;
- replacement certificates;
- replacement transcripts; and
- certified or attested award documents.
The University currently charges:
- £20 for a replacement certificate; and
- £10 for a replacement transcript.
A replacement certificate is normally issued only where the original has been lost or stolen. The University permits only one original certificate to remain in circulation.
Digital certificates are unavailable for graduates whose awards predate 2010. University of Central England graduates will therefore normally rely on paper certificates, transcripts or verification letters.
Check the institution name
Historic documents may show:
- University of Central England in Birmingham;
- University of Central England;
- UCE Birmingham;
- Birmingham City University; or
- an associated predecessor or partner institution.
The University of Central England name was approved in 1992. Birmingham City University adopted its present name in 2007.
The earlier name does not invalidate the qualification. However, the exact name printed on the certificate should be used when requesting verification.
Solicitor verification and certification
A basic solicitor-certified copy confirms that the copy matches the document presented to the solicitor.
It does not independently prove that the candidate obtained the qualification.
Our enhanced service reviews the academic document against reliable evidence, such as:
- a HEDD verification;
- a Birmingham City University verification letter;
- an official transcript;
- a replacement certificate; or
- a university-certified document.
Where the evidence supports it, our solicitor can provide certification with authenticity confirmation.
This creates a stronger evidence chain than a basic certified true copy.
FCDO apostille
After academic verification and solicitor certification, the document can proceed to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
An apostille authenticates the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not independently verify the qualification.
The recommended process is:
academic verification → enhanced solicitor certification → FCDO apostille
Our 2 working day express FCDO apostille option covers the apostille stage only.
It excludes:
- HEDD processing;
- university record searches;
- transcript production;
- replacement certificates;
- courier delivery; and
- embassy legalisation.
Embassy legalisation
Documents intended for a destination outside the Hague Apostille Convention may require further embassy or consular legalisation.
A typical process is:
solicitor certification → FCDO legalisation → embassy legalisation
The receiving authority may also request an official transcript, university verification letter, certified translation or identity document.

- the receiving authority’s requirements.
