If you need to use a University of Sunderland degree certificate, transcript, or verification document overseas, the key is to follow the right order from the start.
In most cases, this is not just about getting a document “certified.” The real process may involve verification, solicitor authentication, solicitor certification, FCDO apostille, and sometimes embassy legalisation / attestation.
About the University of Sunderland
The University of Sunderland is a UK degree-awarding institution. For graduates, one of the most important practical points is that the university now uses its Awards and Verification Portal, which allows eligible graduates to access and share formal award documents electronically with third parties. The university states that the portal covers graduates from 2004 to the present day. For awards from 2024 onwards, portal documents may include a certificate, transcript and verification letter. For many graduates awarded between 2004 and 2023, the portal provides a certificate and transcript, with verification-letter availability handled separately by the university.
University of Sunderland degree verification: two main routes
For University of Sunderland documents, there are two practical verification routes.
1. University of Sunderland Awards and Verification Portal
The university’s portal allows eligible graduates to share available electronic award documents directly with third parties, including employers, recruitment agencies and higher education institutions. The system is designed to let the graduate control access and share documents securely.
2. HEDD
HEDD also handles University of Sunderland degree verification, but its own guidance says that to verify Sunderland graduates, the candidate should register with the Sunderland Awards and Verification Portal and provide their registration email address to HEDD. HEDD also notes that the University of Sunderland cannot verify awards issued before 2004 through HEDD, and that if the candidate has a QR-coded certificate, that should be uploaded as supporting evidence.
Solicitor authentication and solicitor certification
This is where many cases go wrong.
A receiving authority often does not just want someone to say:
“this is a printout presented to me.”
That wording is often too weak for overseas use.
Where appropriate, solicitor authentication and solicitor certification should do more than confirm that a copy matches a document shown to the solicitor. The certification should also address the authenticity path behind the document, for example by checking the relevant university or third-party verification route before certification.
That is the difference between:
- a basic copy certification, and
- a more robust solicitor-certified document prepared for apostille and possible embassy legalisation.
FCDO apostille for University of Sunderland documents
Once the document has been prepared properly, it may then be submitted for a UK apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
If the destination country is a Hague Apostille Convention country, the apostille may be the final step.
If the destination country is not using apostille alone, you may also need embassy legalisation / attestation after the apostille.
At Ginkgo Advisory, we can assist with 2 working day UK apostille in suitable cases.
How Ginkgo Advisory can help
At Ginkgo Advisory, we help clients with the full process for University of Sunderland documents, including:
- checking the most suitable verification route
- reviewing whether the document should be supported by the University of Sunderland Awards and Verification Portal, HEDD, or both
- preparing solicitor authentication
- providing solicitor certification that goes beyond a bare “true copy” statement
- arranging FCDO apostille within 2 working days
- handling embassy legalisation / attestation where required
We are not a volume-only stamping service. Where needed, we build the certification around the actual verification pathway, so the document is stronger for overseas use.
Practical point
For many University of Sunderland graduates, the best starting question is not “Can you certify my degree?” but:
What is the correct verification path for my year of award, and what form of certified document will the overseas authority actually accept?
That question usually saves time, avoids rejection, and helps prevent having to redo the certification later.
