A request for TRO-authenticated academic documents after study at University of the Highlands and Islands should be matched to your course, award year and the body named on each record. Ginkgo Advisory can help organise the official documents and coordinate their preparation for the Taipei Representative Office procedure used for your Taiwan submission.
TRO authentication for Taiwan: the paper-apostille route runs from issuer authenticity confirmation to appropriate UK solicitor or notary certification, a paper FCDO apostille and then TRO authentication. The TRO also publishes a separate direct-issuer method. The document set and chosen method determine the preparation needed.
Separate UHI degree records from SQA and other validated study
University of the Highlands and Islands degree transcripts bring together study across the degree programme, including modules, results, credits and recognised or transferred credit. They do not include work validated by other institutions, such as SQA HNC or HND courses. If your route into a UHI degree included one of those qualifications, identify whether the Taiwan recipient needs the earlier award as well. Request its record through the relevant provider rather than expecting it to appear as a complete course transcript within the UHI document.
The university Student Records Office supplies degree transcripts and additional copies. Its published retention policy limits module achievement data to ten years after the year of leaving the programme. Beyond that period, UHI can confirm awards but cannot provide a full record of achieved modules. For an older qualification, ask which evidence can be issued before planning a submission that depends on detailed marks. Nursing graduates should also distinguish the standard academic record from the separate detailed curriculum transcript described by UHI.
UHI certificates can be issued in English or Gaelic, and Student Records handles enquiries about an English version where a graduate holds a Gaelic certificate. Replacement certificates require an application to that office and remain subject to the university\’s decision. Confirm the recorded name, language and awarding details before preparing the Taiwan document set. An appropriately identified certificate and the available study evidence can then be coordinated for certification, apostille and TRO authentication.
Awarding-body point: UHI supplies its degree records; separately validated qualifications such as SQA HNCs and HNDs require records from the relevant educational provider or awarding route.
Official institution information: University of the Highlands and Islands: academic transcripts; University of the Highlands and Islands: award certificates and replacements.
The teaching institution and the degree-awarding body can be different. Use the issuer on your certificate and the arrangements for your programme and cohort when requesting confirmation. GOV.UK: identify the degree-awarding institution.
Choose the TRO authentication method
The official TRO education-document instructions describe two methods. A record supplied for initial review, a verification response and a document ready for authentication serve different purposes. Establish which method will be used before ordering certification or dispatching papers.
Method 1 — certification and paper apostille: the UK solicitor or notary obtains authenticity confirmation from the issuing institution or awarding body before certifying the document. The certification must address authenticity appropriately; matching a photocopy to a supplied original alone should not be assumed sufficient. The prepared document receives a paper FCDO apostille and is then submitted to the TRO.
The TRO education guidance specifies paper apostilles for this route. A digital certificate, secure portal share, HEAR or electronic verification can assist the authenticity work where available, but it does not replace that paper apostille. The FCDO checks the relevant signature, stamp or seal. FCDO document legalisation guidance.
Method 2 — direct issuer confirmation: the issuing institution or awarding body sends the required confirmation or certified educational document directly to the TRO under its accepted procedure. A college can confirm records it issues; the awarding university may need to confirm the degree separately. A forwarded email or student-uploaded PDF is not automatically equivalent to the required direct institutional transmission.
Identify the responsible TRO office and its submission arrangements. London and Edinburgh publish separate instructions; the name of the teaching institution alone does not settle the office for the application. See the TRO Edinburgh academic-document guidance where that office handles the submission.
Which Highlands and Islands academic documents need authentication?
| Document | Preparation point for the TRO application |
|---|---|
| Degree or qualification certificate | Identify the exact award title, awarding body, graduate name and award date. Keep degrees, diplomas and other certificates accurately labelled. |
| Final transcript, results statement or HEAR where issued | Identify the issuer, completed qualification, modules, credits and study years. Establish whether this record needs its own authentication. |
| Award confirmation or supporting letter | Establish what the letter confirms and whether the Taiwan recipient accepts it for the requested purpose, particularly for historical or research records. |
Include every relevant page and any reverse-side endorsement. For a former name, provide the supporting name-change evidence needed for the application. Identify the awarding body, teaching institution, country of study and issuer of each document. A UK-awarded degree and a transcript issued by an overseas partner may require different preparation.
Match the documents to their intended use in Taiwan
Study: BOCA’s specified full-time foreign-student resident visa checklist includes the highest education diploma and transcripts for each year, with overseas-mission authentication. This can mean preparing both the qualification certificate and the academic record. BOCA student visa document checklist.
Employment: ask the employer to identify the qualification evidence for the relevant work-permit application. BOCA’s white-collar resident visa checklist does not create a universal requirement for every worker to authenticate both a degree and transcript. The work permit and resident visa are separate stages. BOCA white-collar worker checklist.
Academic or professional assessment: TRO authentication does not itself grant academic recognition, admission or professional registration. The receiving organisation assesses the qualification and study arrangement for its purpose. Taiwan regulations on recognition of foreign academic records.
Prepare the submission and return delivery
- Provide the Taiwan recipient’s document list and identify which certificate, transcript or supporting letter needs TRO authentication.
- Record the course, award year, awarding body, place of study and issuer of each document, including any partner or former institutional name.
- Arrange the graduate’s consent and the issuer verification or secure sharing needed to establish authenticity.
- For the FCDO method, agree the original or certified-copy format, appropriate certification, paper apostille and separate-document arrangements.
- Prepare the supporting application papers and any required translation, then arrange TRO submission, return delivery and copies of the completed set.
Ginkgo Advisory support and processing stages
Ginkgo Advisory can review the certificate and transcript, identify the relevant issuing offices and coordinate the preparation required for the selected TRO method. This may include authenticity enquiries, suitable solicitor certification, the paper apostille and TRO submission. A quotation should identify the documents, third-party charges and return delivery. See our Taiwan academic-document authentication service.
Allow for each part of the process: replacement records where needed, issuer responses, certification, FCDO processing for the apostille method, TRO processing and delivery. These stages have separate dependencies. Any quoted apostille-stage timing begins only when the documents are ready for that stage and does not include institution verification, TRO processing or courier transit. Our UK paper apostille service forms part of this preparation where required.
FAQs: Highlands and Islands documents for Taiwan
Will my UHI degree transcript include the full results of an earlier SQA HND?
UHI excludes separately validated courses, including SQA HNDs, from its degree transcript. The degree record may show transferred or recognised credit, but the earlier qualification\’s detailed results must be requested through the relevant educational provider. Identify both records if Taiwan requires them.
Who verifies a degree taught at Highlands and Islands but awarded elsewhere?
Identify the awarding body printed on the degree and the office responsible for the transcript. The award issuer confirms the qualification, while the teaching institution may hold the detailed study record. Supply both names and the award year so the correct verification requests and TRO preparation can be arranged.
Is a UK apostille enough when Taiwan requests TRO authentication?
A paper FCDO apostille completes the UK legalisation stage for the apostille method. If the recipient requires TRO-authenticated documents, the prepared record must also pass through the responsible Taipei Representative Office’s authentication stage.
Can the certificate and transcript share one apostille?
The relevant TRO office and recipient must accept the proposed combined format. Two records from the same course or institution are not automatically treated as one document. Identify the required authentication for each record before arranging a bundle.
Can I start the process while outside the UK?
Clear copies, the award details and the Taiwan recipient’s instructions can be provided for an initial review. The consent, official records and original-paper requirements of the selected TRO method must then be established before processing and international delivery are arranged.
Do English academic documents always need a Chinese translation?
BOCA’s cited full-time student checklist requires a Chinese or English translation when the documents are in neither language. An English academic document may meet that language condition. Any separate translation instructions from the university, employer or professional body apply to that submission.
Is TRO authentication the same as Taiwan embassy legalisation?
People sometimes use Taiwan embassy legalisation as a search term. In the UK, the relevant office is the Taipei Representative Office. Its authentication process is a distinct stage from the FCDO apostille and the Taiwan recipient’s assessment of the qualification.
