Arranging a Westminster degree apostille? Do not assume that a university-certified copy, official transcript or replacement original is ready to send straight to the FCDO. Obtaining the academic document and preparing it for legalisation are separate steps. An institutional stamp or digital credential does not automatically satisfy the requirements for a UK paper apostille or e-Apostille.
This is the key certified-copy mistake to avoid when using documents from University of Westminster overseas. The document may be the right underlying evidence, but ordering it again does not, by itself, complete the legalisation process. Ginkgo Advisory provides solicitor-led verification, certification, FCDO apostille support and further embassy legalisation where needed.
Westminster: the official document request link
Official institution page: https://www.westminster.ac.uk/about-us/our-university/corporate-information/policies-and-documents-a-z/transcript-and-certificate-requests
The University of Westminster\’s document page separates graduates from 2022 onwards, who have secure electronic award documents, from graduates between 1994 and 2021 using the online store. Those who graduated in 1993 or earlier must first contact the Student Lifecycle Team for an archive check and should not pay through the store prematurely. Replacement certificates are for irretrievably lost originals. Current students or those without a conferred award have a module-profile alternative rather than a final transcript.
For Westminster, give your award year and completed-award status when asking Ginkgo Advisory to review the case. A module profile containing provisional results is not equivalent to a final award transcript. The institution\’s archive preparation period also falls outside the apostille processing stage.
The mistake: treating university certification as apostille preparation
Where University of Westminster offers a certified-copy service, its endorsement records what the institution has checked or supplied. A replacement certificate replaces missing or damaged documentary evidence of an existing award. Neither description, on its own, tells you that the relevant signature has been prepared for FCDO legalisation. Do not rely solely on the words “certified”, “official”, “original” or “digitally verified”.
GOV.UK’s legalisation guidance lists qualification certificates among documents requiring certification by an appropriate UK public official, such as a solicitor or notary. For the standard qualification-document route, arrange the appropriate UK certification before submission. The recipient may also specify the certifier, the use of an original or copy, and whether each document needs its own apostille.
- University issue or certification: provides an official academic document or the institution’s endorsement of a copy.
- Verification with the issuer: checks the award or document through the institution’s authorised route.
- Solicitor certification: records the checks actually completed and prepares the relevant signature for legalisation.
- FCDO apostille: authenticates the relevant signature, seal or stamp. It does not independently verify the academic contents, establish academic equivalence or guarantee acceptance overseas.
Does a replacement Westminster degree certificate avoid certification?
No. Reissuing a lost or damaged certificate does not remove the need to prepare it correctly for the intended apostille route. The same distinction applies to an additional official transcript. A replacement may be necessary if you no longer have suitable evidence, but it is not a shortcut around certification.
An official transcript may be the correct document where a certified photocopy is unavailable. Confirm that it covers the required award, modules and results. Research degrees and older courses may have different record formats, so an award letter should not be substituted without the recipient’s agreement.
A university PDF is not automatically ready for an e-Apostille
For an FCDO e-Apostille, the uploaded PDF must be electronically signed by a UK solicitor or notary. A university PDF, HEAR, e-certificate or scan is not automatically a substitute for that professional electronic signature. A university’s digital verification system and the FCDO’s electronic legalisation process perform different functions.
Ginkgo Advisory can review eligibility, complete the appropriate verification and arrange solicitor electronic certification for our UK e-Apostille service. Confirm acceptance with the receiving organisation first. If it requires paper documents or a consular process involving physical documents, choose the route that meets those requirements.
Solicitor verification and certification of Westminster documents
With your consent, Ginkgo Advisory can coordinate checks with University of Westminster or the actual awarding body and its approved verification channel. Depending on the award, this may involve a registry response, secure credential sharing or HEDD where supported. We confirm the route for your case rather than assuming that one system covers every institution.
A simple true-copy check confirms that a copy matches the evidence inspected; it does not necessarily verify the award itself. Our solicitor certification service can reflect issuer verification once that verification has been completed. The wording must match the checks performed and the receiving authority’s instructions. If the recipient specifically requires a notary, that requirement must be addressed separately.
Express 2-working-day paper FCDO apostille
Ginkgo Advisory offers an express paper UK FCDO apostille service with a target of 2 working days once verification is complete and the correctly certified documents are ready for submission. This is the apostille stage, not a promise that the entire university-to-embassy process will finish in two days.
University record retrieval, replacement orders, verification responses, embassy processing and courier delivery take additional time. FCDO signature checks and service availability can also affect timing. Send your deadline at the outset so we can assess the practical sequence before you incur avoidable document-ordering costs.
Embassy legalisation for the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar or another destination
Where the destination requires additional embassy or consular legalisation, Ginkgo Advisory can coordinate that stage after the relevant UK preparation. This can include UAE, Kuwait and Qatar cases, subject to the current requirements for your qualification and intended use. Some routes require separate documents, additional academic confirmation or physical submission. Electronic apostille acceptance must be checked for the actual route.
Do not assume that an apostille alone completes every overseas requirement. Tell us whether the documents are for employment, further study, professional registration or another purpose, and provide any written instructions from the recipient. Embassy attestation and recognition of the qualification are separate questions.
What to send for a document review
- Clear copies of your University of Westminster degree certificate and transcript, or details of the documents currently available.
- Your award title, study dates, student number if known, and the name of the awarding institution shown on the document.
- The destination country, intended use, recipient’s document instructions and deadline.
- Details of any secure digital sharing option, plus the delivery requirements if paper documents are needed.
Ask Ginkgo Advisory to review your documents before ordering unnecessary replacements. We will explain the verification route, certification format and suitable apostille option, and quote any required embassy or delivery stage. Our UK degree and transcript certification guide explains the wider process.
Westminster certified-copy and apostille questions
Can I submit a Westminster certified copy directly to the FCDO?
Do not assume that the institution’s certification alone is enough. Check the actual signature and document against the FCDO requirements and arrange the appropriate solicitor or notary certification for the standard qualification route. The university copy can still be useful underlying evidence.
Does a replacement original degree or transcript already include an apostille?
No. An official replacement supplies the academic document. The FCDO apostille is a separate legalisation step and must be arranged through the applicable process.
Can Ginkgo Advisory verify documents while I am overseas?
Many enquiries can begin remotely with clear scans and authorised digital sharing. We confirm the consent, identity checks, original-document inspection and recipient requirements for your case before deciding how it can proceed.
Is Ginkgo Advisory part of the university?
No. Ginkgo Advisory is an independent service provider. University of Westminster or the relevant awarding body issues academic records. Ginkgo Advisory coordinates verification, solicitor certification and legalisation services; the FCDO issues the UK apostille.
