An ACRO Police Certificate can become a critical problem when a visa appointment, university start date, overseas employment deadline or residence application is approaching.

The situation has become more difficult because ACRO has temporarily suspended its Premium Service until further notice.

Applicants who expected to use a faster ACRO service may therefore find themselves relying on the standard application route while an important overseas deadline continues to approach.

Ginkgo Advisory assists with urgent ACRO Police Certificate cases where there is a genuine and documented upcoming deadline.

Depending on the circumstances, we may review the application, act as the applicant’s legal representative, approach ACRO where appropriate and arrange an express paper FCDO apostille once ACRO issues the original certificate.

However, ACRO controls its own processing.

We cannot guarantee expedited processing, an upgrade, a particular issue date or completion before a deadline.

When an ACRO Police Certificate becomes urgent

Many ACRO applications begin as routine matters.

The position changes when an applicant receives a fixed date from an embassy, immigration authority, university, employer or another overseas organisation.

A Police Certificate may suddenly become time-critical because of:

  • a confirmed visa appointment;
  • an immigration submission deadline;
  • a consular appointment;
  • a university registration date;
  • an approaching course start date;
  • an overseas employment start date;
  • a residence permit application;
  • a work permit application;
  • professional registration; or
  • another official deadline.

At that stage, simply waiting may no longer feel sufficient.

Applicants often contact us because their ACRO application remains pending while the remaining time becomes increasingly short.

ACRO Premium Service is currently suspended

ACRO Customer Services confirmed directly to Ginkgo Advisory that it had temporarily suspended Premium Service.

They explained that increased application volumes had resulted in a processing backlog.

The suspension remains in place until further notice.

ACRO has not provided us with a confirmed date for the return of Premium Service.

That means applicants should not assume that they can currently obtain the usual Premium processing option.

It also means that an applicant who has already submitted a standard application cannot assume that ACRO will allow an upgrade.

What does the Premium Service suspension mean for urgent applicants?

The suspension creates a particular problem for applicants who have limited time.

ACRO may still process standard Police Certificate applications, but the absence of the Premium route removes an important option that applicants previously used when they needed faster processing.

A close deadline does not automatically create priority.

Likewise, instructing a solicitor or legal representative does not create a right to accelerated ACRO processing.

Where the circumstances justify it, however, professional representation may help ensure that ACRO receives a clear explanation of the urgency and the supporting circumstances.

ACRO will still make the final decision.

Can Ginkgo Advisory help with an urgent ACRO application?

Potentially, yes.

We consider urgent cases individually.

Our involvement will depend on the stage of the ACRO application, the nature of the deadline and the supporting evidence available.

Where appropriate, our service may include:

  • reviewing the existing ACRO application;
  • identifying issues that may require attention;
  • reviewing correspondence relating to the application;
  • assessing documentary evidence of the deadline;
  • acting as the applicant’s legal representative;
  • making appropriate representations to ACRO;
  • responding to further requests where necessary;
  • monitoring relevant developments concerning Premium Service;
  • considering a possible upgrade if ACRO restores Premium Service; and
  • arranging the next legalisation stage promptly after ACRO issues the certificate.

We cannot promise that ACRO will accept an urgent request.

We also cannot promise that ACRO will process an application within a particular number of days.

Do you need a solicitor for an urgent ACRO Police Certificate?

Not every ACRO application requires legal representation.

However, some applicants prefer professional assistance when they face an imminent overseas deadline and the normal processing timetable no longer fits their circumstances.

Ginkgo Advisory can assess the overall position rather than treating the Police Certificate as an isolated document.

This becomes particularly relevant where the certificate must subsequently undergo FCDO legalisation before the applicant can use it overseas.

Our role is to identify any realistic options and manage the UK document process as efficiently as the circumstances allow.

We do not control ACRO’s decision-making.

Can an urgent ACRO application be expedited?

There is no guaranteed method of expediting an ACRO application while Premium Service remains suspended.

ACRO decides how it processes each application.

In an appropriate case, Ginkgo Advisory may contact ACRO and explain the urgent circumstances.

The existence of a genuine deadline may provide relevant context.

Nevertheless, ACRO may still continue to process the application under its normal procedures.

An urgent approach should therefore never be treated as a guaranteed fast-track service.

Can an existing ACRO application be upgraded?

Applicants regularly ask whether they can upgrade a standard application after submission.

At present, ACRO Premium Service remains temporarily suspended.

As a result, an upgrade cannot be assumed.

If ACRO restores Premium Service while an application remains pending, we may consider contacting ACRO to ask whether an upgrade is possible.

ACRO will determine whether it offers that option and whether the particular application qualifies.

A later upgrade therefore remains entirely dependent on ACRO.

What happens once ACRO issues the Police Certificate?

For many overseas applications, receiving the Police Certificate does not complete the document process.

The applicant may also require an apostille from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

An ACRO Police Certificate requires a paper FCDO apostille.

The UK e-Apostille service does not cover ACRO Police Certificates.

This distinction becomes especially important when the applicant already faces a tight deadline.

The original Police Certificate must first reach the appropriate legalisation process before the FCDO can issue the apostille.

Express FCDO apostille for an ACRO Police Certificate

Ginkgo Advisory can arrange an express paper FCDO apostille after we receive the original ACRO Police Certificate.

Our usual target is approximately two working days for the apostille stage.

That timeframe begins only after the original certificate reaches us.

It does not include:

  • ACRO processing time;
  • delivery of the certificate;
  • additional FCDO verification;
  • weekends or public holidays; or
  • onward courier delivery.

This distinction matters.

An express apostille service cannot make ACRO issue the Police Certificate earlier.

Its purpose is to reduce avoidable delay at the next stage once ACRO has completed the certificate.

Why timing matters after ACRO issues the certificate

Applicants sometimes focus entirely on the ACRO application.

However, the Police Certificate may still require further processing before an overseas authority can use it.

When the deadline is close, every additional working day matters.

For that reason, an urgent ACRO matter may require coordination between the Police Certificate stage and the subsequent UK legalisation stage.

Ginkgo Advisory can manage both stages where appropriate.

This allows the apostille process to move forward promptly once the original certificate becomes available.

Can an ACRO Police Certificate receive an e-Apostille?

No.

ACRO Police Certificates require the paper apostille route.

Applicants sometimes contact us expecting to use an e-Apostille because electronic legalisation can be faster for other types of UK documents.

That route does not apply to ACRO Police Certificates.

The original certificate therefore remains important.

Who should contact us for urgent ACRO assistance?

Our urgent service is intended for applicants with a specific and evidenced upcoming deadline.

Examples include:

  • a visa appointment;
  • an embassy or consular deadline;
  • an immigration filing date;
  • a university registration deadline;
  • a university course commencement date;
  • an overseas employment start date;
  • a residence permit deadline;
  • a work permit deadline;
  • professional registration; or
  • another fixed official deadline.

Please contact us as soon as the matter becomes genuinely urgent.

The closer the deadline becomes, the fewer practical options may remain.

What counts as a genuine urgent deadline?

We normally expect the applicant to have documentary evidence of the relevant date.

A genuine urgent matter may arise from an official appointment, written request, admission documentation, employment documentation or another formal requirement.

The existence of evidence does not guarantee that ACRO will accelerate the application.

However, it allows us to assess the circumstances properly and determine whether professional intervention may be appropriate.

What if my ACRO application is already pending?

We can review an existing application as well as assist with a new one.

A pending application may require a different approach from an application that has not yet been submitted.

The relevant factors may include:

  • when the applicant submitted the application;
  • its current status;
  • whether ACRO has requested anything further;
  • the remaining time before the deadline;
  • the purpose of the certificate; and
  • whether the applicant also needs an apostille.

We assess these matters together rather than applying a standard response to every case.

What if I have not yet applied for the ACRO Police Certificate?

An urgent deadline does not create Premium Service while the service remains suspended.

Nevertheless, we may still assist with the application and review the wider timing issues.

Applicants with very short deadlines should understand that ACRO controls the processing period.

No representative can guarantee that a new application will reach completion before an imminent appointment.

Can you guarantee that ACRO will respond to an urgent request?

No.

We cannot guarantee that ACRO will:

  • prioritise an application;
  • accept an urgent request;
  • permit an upgrade;
  • restore Premium Service;
  • complete checks within a particular period;
  • issue the Police Certificate before a deadline; or
  • provide a particular response to representations.

We make this clear before accepting urgent instructions.

Our role is to assess whether there is anything practical and appropriate that we can do.

Can you guarantee the apostille in two working days?

Our express paper FCDO apostille service normally targets approximately two working days after we receive the original ACRO Police Certificate.

However, we cannot guarantee every FCDO completion time.

The FCDO may require additional verification or encounter other operational issues.

The two-working-day target also excludes delivery time.

Applicants should therefore avoid treating the apostille target as a guaranteed overall completion date.

Does Ginkgo Advisory provide a complete ACRO and apostille service?

Yes, where appropriate.

We can assist with the ACRO Police Certificate application and subsequent UK apostille process.

For urgent matters, combining the stages can reduce unnecessary handovers once ACRO issues the certificate.

The precise scope depends on the applicant’s circumstances.

Some clients already have a pending ACRO application and only require urgent assistance with the existing case.

Others require assistance from the initial application through to the completed apostille.

We can assess either situation.

Is this service only for student visas?

No.

Our ACRO and FCDO apostille services are not limited to any particular visa category or destination country.

Clients may need a Police Certificate for:

  • immigration;
  • residence;
  • employment;
  • education;
  • professional registration;
  • citizenship matters;
  • licensing;
  • overseas regulatory requirements; or
  • other official purposes.

The relevant overseas authority determines its own document requirements.

Ginkgo Advisory focuses on the UK document and legalisation process.

Can overseas applicants use the service?

Yes.

Many applicants who require an ACRO Police Certificate no longer live in the United Kingdom.

We can assist clients based overseas, subject to the circumstances of the case and the necessary verification requirements.

We can also arrange international return delivery after completion.

Courier charges apply separately.

Why instruct Ginkgo Advisory?

Urgent document matters require careful coordination.

Our service combines legal representation with practical experience in UK document certification and legalisation.

Where appropriate, we can handle:

ACRO application → urgent case review → legal representation → monitoring → original Police Certificate → express FCDO apostille → return delivery

This does not give us control over ACRO or the FCDO.

It does allow us to manage the parts of the process that fall within our professional role.
