Need to use a UK divorce document in Denmark?
If your previous marriage ended in England or Wales, the Danish authority may ask for proof that you are legally divorced before you can marry again or update your civil status.
For a UK divorce, that proof is usually a Decree Absolute or Final Order.
For Denmark, you should prepare the document clearly:
UK divorce document → source review → solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → Danish, English or German translation if required → use in Denmark
Ginkgo Advisory helps clients prepare UK divorce documents for Danish marriage applications, kommune filings, Familieretshuset requirements, civil status updates, notarial matters, property matters, inheritance and official use in Denmark.
1. Why Denmark May Ask for Your UK Divorce Document
Denmark is popular for international marriages because many foreign nationals can marry there with a streamlined process.
However, if you have been married before, Danish authorities usually need proof that the previous marriage has ended.
You may need a UK Decree Absolute or Final Order for:
- marriage in Denmark after a UK divorce;
- remarriage before a Danish kommune;
- an application handled by Familieretshuset;
- proof of marital status;
- Danish civil status records;
- immigration, residence or family matters;
- Danish notary or lawyer use;
- inheritance or succession;
- property sale, transfer or registration;
- official filing with a Danish authority.
Familieretshuset states that documents may need apostille or legalisation, and that documents must be translated into Danish, English or German where required.
2. Decree Absolute or Final Order?
A Decree Absolute is the older final divorce order in England and Wales.
It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.
A Final Order is the current final divorce order.
It usually applies to divorce cases issued on or after 6 April 2022.
Both documents prove that a marriage or civil partnership has legally ended.
For Denmark, the key question is not the name of the document. The key question is whether the document clearly proves the previous UK marriage ended and whether it has been prepared in a format the Danish authority can accept.
3. Do Not Use a Loose PDF Without Checking It
Many clients only have an old scan, downloaded court PDF or unclear copy.
That may not be the best version for Denmark.
Before apostille, check:
- 文件是 Decree Absolute 還是 Final Order;
- whether it came from HMCTS or the court;
- whether it is an electronic PDF, court copy, scan or paper document;
- whether the names, dates, court details and case number are clear;
- whether the electronic Family Court seal appears correctly;
- whether a fresh HMCTS or court copy would create a stronger starting point;
- whether solicitor certification is needed before FCDO apostille.
Ginkgo Advisory can review the document and identify the safer route.
4. Why Solicitor Certification Matters
Some providers only certify a copy with basic wording such as:
“I certify this is a true copy of the document presented to me.”
That wording may be too limited for overseas use.
It may only confirm that someone showed a printout to the solicitor. It may not explain the source, format or link to the UK court-issued document.
Ginkgo Advisory takes a stronger approach.
Where possible, we review the source and format before certification. We then prepare wording that reflects the real document.
The certification may refer to:
- an HMCTS-issued copy;
- an electronic court PDF;
- a true copy of the original electronic divorce document;
- a court-sourced Decree Absolute or Final Order;
- a document prepared for FCDO apostille and Denmark use.
We do not simply certify that a printout was presented.
We build a clearer document trail.
5. Electronic UK Divorce Orders
Many modern divorce orders from England and Wales are electronic documents.
They may show an electronic Family Court seal.
That does not make the document invalid.
The issue is presentation.
A Danish authority may not be familiar with the UK electronic divorce format. A solicitor-certified and apostilled package can make the document easier to understand.
The wording should match the document.
A PDF should be described as a PDF.
An HMCTS copy should link back to HMCTS.
A scan should not be overstated.
Accurate wording supports a better apostille application and a cleaner Denmark-use document package.
6. FCDO Apostille for Denmark
After solicitor certification, Ginkgo Advisory can arrange the UK 英国 FCDO 海牙认证.
GOV.UK confirms that the UK Legalisation Office legalises documents by checking the relevant signature, stamp or seal and attaching an apostille.
Denmark is a Hague Apostille Convention country. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains the Danish apostille/legalisation system, and the Danish Embassy in the UK states that when a document has an apostille, another embassy legalisation is usually no longer necessary.
In suitable cases, Ginkgo Advisory can arrange a 2 个工作日英国 apostille 服务 once the document is ready.
This can help where you face a deadline for a Danish marriage application, kommune filing, Familieretshuset review, civil status update, residence matter, property matter or inheritance matter.
7. Translation for Denmark
A Danish authority may ask for a translation.
Familieretshuset states that documents must be translated into Danish, English or German where required.
Before submission, check whether the receiving authority needs:
- Danish translation;
- English version;
- German translation;
- certified translation;
- original apostilled document;
- scanned copies for pre-approval;
- physical originals for the appointment.
Ginkgo Advisory can prepare the UK-side document trail so the apostilled divorce document is ready for the next stage.
