Need to use a UK divorce document in Turkey?
If your previous marriage ended in England or Wales, a Turkish authority may ask for proof that you are legally divorced. The usual UK proof is a Decree Absolute or Final Order.
For Turkey, the document should usually follow a clean UK legalisation route:
UK divorce document → source review → solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → Turkish translation if required → use in Turkey
Ginkgo Advisory helps clients prepare UK divorce documents for Turkey with solicitor certification, source-based review, FCDO apostille and Turkey-ready document presentation.
Turkey is a Hague Apostille Convention country, and the UK Legalisation Office confirms that it legalises UK documents by checking the relevant signature, stamp or seal and attaching an apostille.
1. When You May Need a UK Divorce Document in Turkey
Clients often need a UK Decree Absolute or Final Order for:
- marriage or remarriage in Turkey;
- Turkish civil registry filing;
- submission to a Turkish marriage office;
- proof of previous divorce;
- Turkish immigration or visa matters;
- residence permit or family application support;
- Turkish court proceedings;
- Turkish lawyer, notary or bank use;
- property sale, transfer or inheritance matters;
- official filing before a Turkish authority.
A Turkish marriage office, civil registry, notary, court, immigration office or local authority may ask for specific supporting documents. Always check the final checklist with the receiving authority in Turkey.
2. Decree Absolute or Final Order?
A Decree Absolute is the older final divorce order in England and Wales.
It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.
A Final Order is the current final divorce order.
It usually applies to divorce cases issued on or after 6 April 2022.
Both documents prove that the marriage or civil partnership has legally ended.
For Turkey, the practical issue is not only the document name. The important question is whether the document has a clear source, accurate solicitor certification, a valid FCDO apostille and any required Turkish translation.
3. Why an Old Scan or PDF May Not Be Enough
Many clients only have an old scan, court PDF or downloaded copy.
That may not be the best version for Turkey.
Before apostille, check:
- whether the document came from HMCTS or the court;
- whether it is a Decree Absolute or Final Order;
- whether it is an electronic PDF, court copy, scan or paper document;
- whether the names, dates, case number and court details are clear;
- whether the electronic Family Court seal appears properly;
- whether a fresh HMCTS or court copy would create a stronger starting point;
- whether solicitor certification is needed before FCDO apostille.
Ginkgo Advisory can review the document and identify the safer route before submission.
4. Why Solicitor Certification Matters
有些服务提供者只会写:
“I certify this is a true copy of the document presented to me.”
That wording may be too narrow for overseas use.
It may only confirm that someone showed a printout to the solicitor. It may not explain the document source, format or link to the UK court-issued record.
Ginkgo Advisory takes a stronger approach.
Where possible, we review the document source and format before certification. We then prepare wording that reflects the real document.
The wording may refer to:
- an HMCTS-issued copy;
- an electronic court PDF;
- a true copy of an original electronic divorce document;
- a court-sourced Decree Absolute;
- a court-sourced Final Order;
- a document prepared for FCDO apostille and Turkey use.
We do not simply certify that a printout was presented.
We help build a stronger document trail.
5. Electronic UK Divorce Orders
Many modern divorce orders from England and Wales are electronic documents.
They may contain an electronic image of the Family Court seal.
That does not make the divorce order invalid.
The issue is presentation.
A Turkish civil registry office, notary, court, lawyer or immigration authority may not be familiar with the UK electronic divorce format. A solicitor-certified and apostilled package can make the document easier to understand.
The certification should describe the document accurately.
A PDF should be described as a PDF.
An HMCTS copy should link back to HMCTS.
A scan should not be overstated.
Accurate wording supports a stronger apostille application and a cleaner Turkey-use package.
6. FCDO Apostille for Turkey
After solicitor certification, Ginkgo Advisory can arrange the UK 英国 FCDO 海牙认证.
The apostille confirms the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal for overseas use. GOV.UK explains that the Legalisation Office checks whether signatures, stamps or seals match its records and then legalises the document by attaching an apostille.
Because Turkey is a Hague Apostille Convention country, a UK document for Turkey will usually need the FCDO apostille rather than Turkish Consulate legalisation. Legalisation providers also describe Turkey as an apostille-only route, with no further Turkish consular legalisation normally required for UK documents.
In suitable cases, Ginkgo Advisory can arrange a 2 个工作日英国 apostille 服务 once the document is ready.
This can help if you face a deadline for marriage, civil registry filing, residence, immigration, property completion, inheritance, notarial signing or court use in Turkey.
7. Turkish Translation
A Turkish authority may ask for a Turkish translation.
Depending on the use, this may need to be:
- a certified Turkish translation;
- a sworn translator translation;
- a notarised translation in Turkey;
- a translation accepted by the Turkish civil registry, notary, court or authority;
- a translation completed after the apostille has been attached.
Translation rules can vary by authority and location. A marriage office in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Bodrum, Bursa or another Turkish city may apply its own practical checklist.
Ginkgo Advisory can prepare the UK-side document trail so the apostilled divorce document is ready for the Turkish translation and filing stage.
