An FCDO e-Apostille includes a unique reference number.

This number helps overseas authorities and other recipients check the apostille online. It also helps confirm that the apostille certificate was issued by the UK Legalisation Office.

What Details Do You Need?

To verify a UK apostille, you usually need two details:

  • the apostille number
  • the date the apostille was issued

GOV.UK explains that the official UK verification service can verify either a paper or electronic apostille certificate issued in the UK. It also states that the issue date and apostille number appear on the apostille certificate.

Where to Find the Apostille Number

The apostille number normally appears on the apostille certificate.

It may also appear on the e-Apostille cover sheet.

In the sample e-Apostille, the cover sheet displays a reference number and identifies the attached e-Apostille certificate.

The number often uses groups of letters and numbers. The exact format may vary.

How to Verify the e-Apostille

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the legalised PDF in Adobe Reader.
  2. Open the apostille certificate attachment.
  3. Find the apostille number.
  4. Find the issue date.
  5. Use the official UK apostille verification service.
  6. Enter the number and date exactly as shown.
  7. Check whether the details match the certificate.

This process helps the recipient confirm the apostille certificate.

Keep the Legalised File in Digital Form

An e-Apostille is designed for digital use.

The legalised PDF may include attachments and electronic signatures. Therefore, the recipient should usually receive the full PDF package, not a screenshot, printout or flattened copy.

If the file gets printed, scanned or separated, important digital evidence may be lost.

What the Apostille Verification Does Not Do

Apostille verification confirms the apostille certificate.

It does not necessarily prove every fact in the underlying document.

For example, where a solicitor certifies an academic transcript, the apostille may confirm the solicitor’s signature and capacity. It does not automatically confirm every grade, date or academic record in the underlying document.

That is why enhanced solicitor certification can help.

How Our Solicitor Helps

Our solicitor can prepare eligible documents for a clearer legalisation chain.

Where possible, we can verify the document before certification. We can then prepare enhanced wording to explain the verification carried out.

After that, our solicitor can digitally sign the PDF and arrange FCDO e-Apostille submission.

This gives the recipient a more complete picture:

verified document → solicitor certification → solicitor digital signature → FCDO e-Apostille → online verification

常见问题(FAQ)

How do I verify an FCDO e-Apostille?

Use the apostille number and issue date shown on the apostille certificate through the official UK apostille verification service.

Can I verify an electronic apostille?

Yes. GOV.UK says the service can verify either a paper or electronic apostille certificate issued in the UK.

Does verification prove the document content?

It verifies the apostille certificate. It does not automatically prove every fact in the underlying document.

Should I send a printed e-Apostille?

Usually no. Send the full legalised PDF because the attachments and signatures sit inside the digital file.
