If a Ghanaian authority asks for a <strong>Certificate of No Impediment<\/strong> or <strong>marital status affirmation<\/strong>, the key point is this: the <strong>British Embassy or British Consulate does not issue these documents for Ghana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may need to explain this to the Ghanaian authority and ask what alternative evidence they will accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No British Embassy Certificate of No Impediment for Ghana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Ghana, the British Embassy or British Consulate does not issue a <strong>Certificate of No Impediment<\/strong>, also known as a <strong>CNI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also does not issue a standard <strong>marital status affirmation<\/strong> for Ghana in the same way it does for some non-Commonwealth countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a Ghanaian authority asks you for a CNI or marital status affirmation, you may need to explain that the British Embassy does not issue these documents for Commonwealth countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should check whether there is a standard letter or official explanation that can help confirm this position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean you have no documents to prepare. A Ghanaian authority may still ask for other evidence, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a local notarised affirmation that you are free to marry;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an affirmation before a commissioner of oaths;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a No Trace Letter from the UK General Register Office;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of identity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof that any previous marriage has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other documents required under Ghanaian law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before arranging your wedding, check the exact list with the Ghanaian registrar, local authority or person conducting your ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local Affirmation Before a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the British Embassy does not issue a CNI for Ghana, you may be able to swear an affirmation that you are free to marry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can usually do this before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a local notary public; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a commissioner of oaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ghanaian authority may ask for this type of declaration as part of the marriage paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before arranging the affirmation, check with the Ghanaian registrar or the person conducting your ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can confirm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what wording they need;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the affirmation must be notarised;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether a commissioner of oaths can witness it;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether it needs an apostille or further legalisation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether it needs to be recent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether supporting documents are required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This step is important because a local affirmation is not the same as a British Embassy CNI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Trace Letter From the General Register Office<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may also be able to apply for a <strong>No Trace Letter<\/strong> from the UK General Register Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A No Trace Letter can show that no marriage record has been found for a person within the searched period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may help where a Ghanaian authority asks for evidence of single status or marital history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a No Trace Letter is not the same as a CNI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should check whether the Ghanaian authority will accept it before relying on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marriage Registration in Ghana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you marry in Ghana, your marriage will be registered in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will not be added to UK marriage records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot register the marriage later at a UK register office, British Embassy or British Consulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should keep your Ghanaian marriage certificate as evidence of your marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to use the certificate outside Ghana, you may need a translation, apostille or further legalisation, depending on the destination country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Were Previously Married<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you were previously married, the Ghanaian authority may ask for proof that the previous marriage has ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For England and Wales, this usually means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong>; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a <strong>Final Order<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> is the older final divorce order. It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Final Order<\/strong> is the current final divorce order. Others may come with a covering email from the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Ghanaian authority may not be familiar with the format of an English electronic divorce order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A loose printout may not explain the document clearly. It may also fail to show the source trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stronger route may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reviewing the UK court document;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>checking whether it is a court PDF, HMCTS copy or paper order;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preparing solicitor certification;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arranging a UK FCDO apostille where needed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arranging any further steps required for Ghana.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives the Ghanaian authority a clearer document chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need an Apostille for Ghana?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should check this with the Ghanaian authority or the person conducting your ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some UK documents used overseas may need legalisation with an apostille.
