It confirms that no legal barrier to your marriage has been shown to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certificate of No Impediment for Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get a CNI for Bulgaria, British nationals usually need to complete a <strong>notice of marriage<\/strong> and an <strong>affirmation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must sign these documents in front of a notary in Bulgaria before applying online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process usually involves these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>download the affirmation and notice forms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fill in your details by hand;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>do not sign the forms yet;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>book an appointment with a notary in Bulgaria;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sign the notice and affirmation in front of the notary;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ask the notary to sign and stamp the documents;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>apply online for the CNI;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pay the application fee;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>post the required documents to the <strong>British Embassy Sofia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CNI fee is <strong>\u00a3100<\/strong>. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a350 for receiving notice; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a350 for issuing the CNI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the CNI has been issued, Bulgarian local authorities usually accept it for <strong>6 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bulgarian Notary Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must sign the notice and affirmation in front of a notary in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not sign the documents before the appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The details on the notarised documents must match the documents you upload online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, your name should match your UK passport exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the details do not match, the British Embassy may ask you to complete a new version and have it notarised again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can delay your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the notary appointment, ask the notary what documents you need to bring. They may ask for proof of address, passport details or other supporting documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply Online for the Bulgaria CNI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the notary appointment, you can apply online for your CNI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply, you usually need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your notarised CNI affirmation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your notarised notice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your UK passport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s passport or national identity card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a credit or debit card for payment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the chosen address where your documents will be sent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any document is not in English or Bulgarian, you may need to upload a certified translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare everything before you start. The online application may time out if you are inactive for 20 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should only apply online after you have signed the notice and affirmation in front of a Bulgarian notary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The online application usually takes about <strong>20 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents to Send to the British Embassy Sofia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you apply online, you will be told which documents to post to the British Embassy Sofia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to post your original passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All original documents will be posted back to you with your CNI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your notice will be displayed for <strong>7 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no one raises a legal objection, your CNI will be issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose whether to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>collect the CNI; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have it posted to your chosen address in Bulgaria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proof of Address if You Live in Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you live in Bulgaria, you need to provide proof of your address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name on your proof of address must match the name on your passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a residence permit, residence certificate or residence card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a bank or mortgage statement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a letter from your bank;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a utility bill;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a council tax bill or local equivalent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a tenancy agreement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a housing association rent card or equivalent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a government tax demand;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a self-assessment statement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your proof of address must usually be dated within the last 3 months, unless it is a residence permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Are Only Staying in Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you do not live in Bulgaria, you must be in Bulgaria for <strong>3 whole days<\/strong> before your notary appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The count starts the day after you arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you arrive in Bulgaria on Thursday, the earliest day you can attend the notary appointment is Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you apply online, you need evidence showing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>when you arrived in Bulgaria; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where you stayed in Bulgaria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prove when you arrived, you may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a hotel or accommodation booking showing you checked in at least 3 days before the notary appointment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a passport stamp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a ticket;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a boarding pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prove where you stayed, you may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a hotel or accommodation booking showing the address; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a written statement from the property owner or tenant if you stayed with friends or family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The written statement should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the dates you stayed at the property;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your full name;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the owner\u2019s or tenant\u2019s full name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marriage Registration in Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you marry in Bulgaria, your marriage will be registered in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will not be added to UK marriage records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot register the marriage later at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a UK register office;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a British Embassy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a British Consulate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should keep your Bulgarian marriage certificate as evidence of your marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to use the certificate outside Bulgaria, you may need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a translation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an apostille;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or further legalisation, depending on the destination country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Documents for Marriage in Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CNI may not be the only document you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bulgarian authority may also ask for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your UK passport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s passport or national identity card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>birth certificates;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of nationality;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of marital status;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>apostilled documents;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>certified Bulgarian translations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should check the exact list before you book travel or confirm a ceremony date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Were Previously Married or in a Civil Partnership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have been married or in a civil partnership before, you must prove that the previous relationship has ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government guidance lists documents such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> or <strong>Final Order<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a death certificate for your husband, wife or civil partner;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an annulment certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For England and Wales divorce cases, you will usually need a <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> or <strong>Final Order<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> is the older final divorce order. It usually applies to divorces completed before 6 April 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Final Order<\/strong> is the current final divorce order. It usually applies to divorce cases issued on or after 6 April 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both documents prove that the previous marriage has legally ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Do Not Have the UK Divorce Document<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many British nationals no longer hold the original Decree Absolute or Final Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some only have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an old scan;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a downloaded PDF;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a court email attachment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a blurred photo;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an electronic divorce order;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an unclear copy from an old file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government guidance says you can order a UK Decree Absolute or Final Order from a divorce, dissolution or annulment record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters because your Bulgaria CNI application may require proof that a previous marriage or civil partnership has ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ginkgo Advisory can help with this UK document stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Divorce Documents Need Extra Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bulgaria guidance includes an important point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only have a digital document showing that the marriage or civil partnership has ended, you can upload it when you apply online.
