It confirms that no legal barrier to your marriage has been shown to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Civil Partnership in Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are forming a civil partnership in Greece, you do not need a CNI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your civil partnership will usually be recognised in the UK if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>you follow the correct process under Greek law; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the civil partnership would be allowed under UK law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should still check the Greek civil partnership requirements before making plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek authority can confirm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which documents you need;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether UK documents need an apostille;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether documents need Greek translation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether previous marriage or civil partnership documents are required;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether any name change documents are needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certificate of No Impediment for Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">British nationals can apply for a CNI through a <strong>British embassy or consulate in Greece<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process involves an online application and an appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>apply online;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pay the CNI fee;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>book an appointment at a British embassy or consulate in Greece;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attend the appointment to give notice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bring the originals of the documents you uploaded;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide proof that you have been in Greece for the required period, if you do not live there;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wait for the 7-day notice period;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collect your CNI from the British Embassy Athens or arrange collection by prepaid courier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government guidance states that the CNI fee is <strong>\u00a3100<\/strong>. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a350 for receiving notice; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a350 for issuing the CNI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once issued, the CNI will usually be accepted for <strong>6 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giving Notice in Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At your appointment, you make a declaration that you intend to get married. This is known as <strong>giving notice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the appointment, you can check the information in your notice and make corrections before signing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your notice will then be displayed for <strong>7 days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no one raises a legal objection, your CNI will be issued after the notice period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should select an appointment at least <strong>7 days after you apply online<\/strong>. This gives consular staff time to check your documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 3 Whole Days Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you do not live in Greece, you must be in Greece for <strong>3 whole days<\/strong> before your notice can be displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The count starts the day after you arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you arrive in Greece on Thursday, the earliest day you can give notice is Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need evidence showing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>when you arrived in Greece; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where you are staying in Greece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prove when you arrived, you may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a hotel or accommodation booking showing you checked in at least 3 days earlier;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a passport stamp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a ticket;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a boarding pass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prove where you are staying, you may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a hotel or accommodation booking showing the address; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a signed statement from the property owner or tenant if you are staying with friends or family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The signed statement should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the dates you are staying at the property;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your full name;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the owner\u2019s or tenant\u2019s full name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your evidence is digital, print it and bring it to your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents Needed for the CNI Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply online for a Greece CNI, you usually need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your UK passport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of address if you live in Greece;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s passport or national identity card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a credit or debit card for payment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any document is not in English or Greek, you may need a certified translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should bring the original document and translation to your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare everything before you start. The online application may time out if you are inactive for 20 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The online application usually takes about <strong>35 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proof of Address if You Live in Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you live in Greece, you need to provide proof of your address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name on your proof of address must match the name on your passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a residence permit, residence certificate or residence card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a bank or mortgage statement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a letter from your bank;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a utility bill;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a council tax bill or local equivalent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a tenancy agreement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a housing association rent card or equivalent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a government tax demand;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a self-assessment statement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your proof of address must usually be dated within the last 3 months, unless it is a residence permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marriage Registration in Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you marry in Greece, your marriage will be registered in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will not be added to UK marriage records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot register the marriage later at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a UK register office;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a British Embassy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a British Consulate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should keep your Greek marriage certificate as evidence of your marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to use the certificate outside Greece, you may need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a translation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an apostille;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or further legalisation, depending on the destination country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Documents for Marriage in Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A CNI may not be the only document you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greek authority may also ask for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your UK passport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>your partner\u2019s passport or national identity card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>birth certificates;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of nationality;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof of marital status;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>proof that any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>apostilled documents;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>certified Greek translations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should check the exact list before you book travel or confirm a ceremony date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Were Previously Married or in a Civil Partnership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have been married or in a civil partnership before, you must prove that the previous relationship has ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government guidance lists documents such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> or <strong>Final Order<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a death certificate for your husband, wife or civil partner;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an annulment certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For England and Wales divorce cases, you will usually need a <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> or <strong>Final Order<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Decree Absolute<\/strong> is the older final divorce order.
